Kangchenjunga views
Clear mornings on the third-highest peak
Kangchenjunga is the third-highest mountain in the world and the guardian deity of Sikkim. From Darjeeling it fills the northern sky at about 75 km. From Sandakphu, on the Singalila ridge, four of the five highest peaks on earth are in sight on a clear day: Everest, Kangchenjunga, Lhotse and Makalu.
The catch is cloud. From June to September the mountains are hidden on most days. The best odds are from mid-October to December, when the air after the monsoon is dry, and again in February and March. Views come early: be at the viewpoint before sunrise and expect cloud by mid-morning.
