Kalimpong and Neora · tour package Nº 71987
Kalimpong, Lava and Gorumara in 4 nights
Families who want both mountains and wildlife usually do Darjeeling and then go to the Dooars by the same road they came up. This trip makes a circle instead. You climb to Kalimpong along the Teesta, cross the ridge to Lava at about 2,200 m, then drop more than 2,000 m through forest and tea gardens via Gorubathan to Lataguri on the edge of Gorumara National Park. You never drive the same road twice, and no day is longer than three and a half hours.
Gorumara is a small park, about 80 sq km, on the Murti and Jaldhaka rivers, with grassland and sal forest. Jeep safaris go to watchtowers where rhino, gaur, elephant, deer and peafowl come to the salt licks and water. It is closed from mid-June to mid-September, like every Dooars park, and safari slots sell out on winter weekends. We book the safaris first and fit the hill nights around them.

Day by day
The timetable
- Day1
Bagdogra or NJP to Kalimpong
We meet you at Bagdogra or NJP and drive along the Teesta through Sevoke and Teesta Bazaar to Kalimpong at about 1,250 m. Since the October 2023 flood NH10 closes often; if it is cut, we reverse the loop and go to Lataguri first. Check current status before you travel. After lunch, visit Zang Dhok Palri on Durpin, consecrated by the Dalai Lama in 1976, and a cactus nursery. Walk the Haat Bazaar if it is a Wednesday or Saturday, and taste Kalimpong cheese, made here since a Swiss Jesuit dairy started in the 1950s.
- Day2
Deolo, then over Algarah to Lava
Morning at Deolo, Kalimpong's highest point at 1,704 m, for the widest view of the town and the Teesta valley, and a look at the cottages of Dr. Graham's Homes, founded in 1900. Drive east through Algarah into fir and pine to Lava at about 2,200 m. Visit Kagyu Thekchen Ling monastery and walk the forest lanes above the lodge in the afternoon. Premium travellers can add a Neora Valley jeep to Zero Point this afternoon or tomorrow at dawn. Nights at Lava are near freezing from December to February; pack a warm layer.
- Day3
Down through Gorubathan to Lataguri
After breakfast take the forest road down from Lava past Gorubathan into the Dooars tea country, dropping from 2,200 m to under 200 m in three hours. The air warms quickly; change into light clothes. Stop at a tea garden roadside or by the Neora river, then on through Chalsa to Lataguri on the edge of Gorumara National Park. Check in and take the afternoon jeep safari, about ₹2,500–4,000 per jeep including entry, guide and watchtower fees, indicative 2026. Rhino, gaur and elephant come to the salt licks near dusk.
- Day4
Morning safari and a Murti river afternoon
A dawn safari to a different watchtower, such as Jatraprasad or Medla, gives the best light and the most birds: hornbills, peafowl, kingfishers and parakeets. Safari slots are booked through the forest department's counter at Lataguri or online; they fill fast on winter weekends. Rest through midday. In the afternoon drive to the Murti river near Chalsa, where the clear water runs over stones out of the hills, or walk through a tea garden with your driver. The park is closed from mid-June to mid-September; check current status before you travel.
- Day5
Lataguri to Bagdogra or NJP
A last walk at the forest edge after breakfast, then drive west along the highway through tea gardens and across the Teesta at the Coronation Bridge near Sevoke or by the main road to Siliguri. Allow 2.5 hours to Bagdogra or NJP, more if traffic is heavy around Siliguri. This is the shortest exit of any hill trip in the region, so an early afternoon flight or train is fine. Check current status before you travel.

- Use WBFDC's Lava lodge and a simple Lataguri lodge; you spend days outdoors, and the forest is at the door of both.
Good to know
- Gorumara National Park and all Dooars safaris close from mid-June to mid-September. Check current status before you travel.

- Mosquito repellent helps at Lataguri, especially in October and from March onward.

Questions people ask
About this package
How far is Lataguri from Lava
About 80 km, three to three and a half hours by road. The route drops from Lava through forest to Gorubathan, then into the Dooars tea gardens and on through Chalsa to Lataguri. A reserved car costs about ₹3,000–4,500, indicative 2026. There are few shared jeeps on this road, so a car is the practical choice. Check current status before you travel.
When is Gorumara National Park open
Gorumara is usually open from mid-September to mid-June and closed from about 16 June to 15 September for the monsoon, as are other Dooars parks. The best months are November to March, when grass is shorter and animals are easier to see. April and May are hot but good near water. Check current status before you travel.
What animals can we see in Gorumara
Indian one-horned rhinoceros and gaur are the main sightings, along with elephants, sambar, barking deer, wild boar and peafowl. Leopards live in the park but are rarely seen. Birders find hornbills, kingfishers, woodpeckers and many grassland species. Sightings depend on the season, the watchtower and luck.
How do we book a Gorumara jeep safari
Safari slots are sold by the forest department, at its counter near Lataguri and online, and through lodges that book for guests. Each slot goes to a specific watchtower. Cost runs about ₹2,500–4,000 per jeep including entry, guide and watchtower fees, indicative 2026. Book early for winter weekends, and check current status before you travel.
Is this trip good for children
Yes. Children enjoy the safari jeeps, the watchtowers and the change from cold hills to warm jungle in one morning. No day is longer than three and a half hours on the road. Bring layers for Lava's cold nights, mosquito repellent for Lataguri, and binoculars. Very young children may get restless in the quiet of a watchtower.
Can we do the trip in reverse, Lataguri first
Yes, and we do so when NH10 to Kalimpong is closed, because Lataguri and Lava can be reached through the Dooars without NH10. Starting with the jungle and ending in the hills also suits travellers arriving in the warm months. The safari days just need to fall on a weekday if possible.
Is Gorumara better than Jaldapara
They differ. Gorumara is smaller and closer to the hills, with watchtower-based safaris and easy access from Lataguri. Jaldapara is larger, further east, and known for more rhinos and for elephant rides when they run. For a short trip that starts in Kalimpong, Gorumara fits far better. For a dedicated wildlife trip, many people do both.
What does Lataguri feel like
Lataguri is a small highway town on the edge of Gorumara, with many resorts and lodges strung along the main road and among tea gardens. It is warm, flat and green, with forest on one side. Evenings are quiet. Most people come only for the safaris, so two nights are enough for two safaris and a rest.
How much is this 4-night trip for a couple
On our budget tier about ₹27,000 for two, indicative 2026, with simple rooms, breakfast and dinners at Lava and Lataguri, a car shared with another couple, and one safari. Comfort runs about ₹45,000 for two with a private car and two safaris. Prices rise around Christmas, New Year and the Puja holidays.
