A stone and timber colonial mansion built in the 1930s by the jute baron George Morgan on a 16-acre estate on Durpin, now run by the West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation. Big old rooms, fireplaces and lawns facing Kanchenjunga, at government heritage prices.

Morgan House was built in the early 1930s as a country house for George Morgan, a Bengal jute baron, on the Durpin ridge about 3 km from Kalimpong town. After independence it passed to the government, went to the state tourism department in 1965 and has been run by WBTDC since 1975. The house keeps its stone chimneys, wooden staircases and wide lawns. Framed notes from earlier guests, including film stars of the 1950s and 60s, hang in the lounge.

It is a comfort-tier stay rather than a luxury hotel: rooms in the old house are large and full of character, while the newer wing is plainer. Service and food are government-style but reliable. Kalimpong also knows it as its 'haunted hotel', a story told for fun with no evidence behind it. Book early for October and December. Tariffs are set by WBTDC and may change; check current rates when you book.

Why we like it

  • A real 1930s colonial mansion at a fair price
  • Lawns facing Kanchenjunga on the Durpin ridge
  • Close to Zang Dhok Palri monastery

Watch out for

Old-house rooms can be cold and creaky, hot water may be slow in the mornings, and the town is 3 km away.

Questions people ask

Good to know

Is Morgan House Kalimpong really haunted

There is no evidence that it is. The ghost story, usually about Lady Morgan walking the corridors, is part of local folklore and gets told to guests for fun. What is real is the history: a 1930s mansion built by jute baron George Morgan, run by WBTDC since 1975. Most guests remember the fireplaces and lawns more than any ghost.

Which rooms are best at Morgan House

Ask for a room in the original heritage building, which has high ceilings, wooden floors and mountain-facing windows. The newer annexe rooms are cheaper and plainer. Heritage rooms cost more and sell out first, especially in October, November and late December, so book them early on the WBTDC website and confirm the room category in writing.

How far is Morgan House from Kalimpong town

It is about 3 km from the town centre on Durpin, around 10–15 minutes by taxi. A local taxi costs roughly ₹200–350 each way, indicative for 2026. The Zang Dhok Palri monastery is nearby, and the army golf course and Durpin viewpoint are a short drive. There are no restaurants right outside, so most guests eat in.
