High passes and lakes
Nathu La, Gurudongmar and the Silk Route
The roads north and east of Gangtok climb from 1,650 m to above 4,000 m in a single morning. That speed is the risk. Altitude sickness can affect anyone above 2,500 m, and the plan should give the body time: a night at Lachen before Gurudongmar, for example, rather than a day trip from Gangtok.
Most of these places are in restricted or protected areas. Indian nationals need permits arranged through registered operators, foreign nationals cannot visit some of them at all, and roads close for snow and landslides. Check current status before you travel.
