The 2-foot line from the plains to Ghum

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, opened in 1881 and listed by UNESCO in 1999, climbs from New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling on a 610 mm gauge with loops and reversing zig-zags. We book the steam and diesel joy rides, the full run when it operates, and plan the days around it.

The line runs about 88 km from New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling and rises to 2,258 m at Ghum, once the highest railway station in India. Its engineers used loops, where the track spirals over itself, and zig-zag reverses to gain height on slopes too steep for an ordinary railway.

Most visitors ride the short joy ride between Darjeeling and Ghum, which stops at the Batasia Loop. The through train from NJP takes most of a day, and landslides in the monsoon often cut the lower section. Seats are booked through Indian Railways, and timetables change by season: check current status before you travel.
