Glenburn Tea Estate
premium
Glenburn was founded in 1859 by a Scottish tea company and has been run by the Kolkata-based Prakash family for four generations. The estate covers about 750 hectares, falling from around 3,000 feet to the Rangeet and Rung Dung rivers, with the Simbong reserve forest inside it. Guests stay in the restored Burra Bungalow, the original planters' house, or the Water Lily Bungalow added in 2008.
There are eight suites, with names such as Kanchenjunga, Rangeet and Rung Dung. Stays usually include meals, tea in the factory and on the verandah, walks with the estate staff, and a picnic or hike down to the Rung Dung river. It is the most complete tea-estate stay in the Darjeeling hills, and priced accordingly. Most guests stay two or three nights.
Why we like it
- Stay inside a working 1859 tea estate
- Meals, walks, tastings and river picnic usually included
- Only eight suites, so it is quiet and personal
Watch out for
The last stretch of road is steep and rough, and the estate is far from town, so plan to stay put rather than tour Darjeeling from here.
