Rhino, gaur and elephant in the Dooars

Jaldapara and Gorumara for the one-horned rhinoceros, Chapramari and Buxa for elephant and gaur, and Neora Valley for the red panda. Parks close in the monsoon, roughly mid-June to mid-September, so we plan safaris from October to May and book zones early.

The Dooars hold the largest rhinoceros population in West Bengal, most of it in Jaldapara, with a smaller herd in Gorumara. Elephants move through the tea gardens and forests along old corridors between Nepal and Assam, and the gaur, the largest wild cattle in the world, is common.

Safaris are jeep drives and watchtower sessions run by the forest department, booked online in advance. Slots are limited at weekends and in the Puja holidays. The parks close for breeding in the monsoon: check current status before you travel.
