The West Bengal Forest Development Corporation's riverside camp at Murti, with 17 cottages of several grades and tents, about 73 km from Siliguri on the edge of Gorumara. Simple, quiet and good value.

Murti Banani sits at Uttar Dhupjhora on the bank of the Murti river, on the north-eastern edge of the Gorumara forests. The forest corporation lists standard, deluxe, super deluxe, VIP and premium cottages and tents, with rates from about ₹1,500 for a tent to about ₹4,000 for a premium cottage. Meals are served at the camp at set prices.

The appeal is the location: you walk out of your cottage to the river, hear the forest at night, and are close to the Chandrachur and Medla watchtowers. The corporation's listing mentions birdwatching, jeep safaris, tea gardens and local temples as nearby activities. Facilities are simple, and you should not expect resort service. Book on the corporation's website, especially for winter weekends.

Why we like it

  • On the Murti riverbank at the edge of Gorumara
  • Wide range of rates, from tents to premium cottages
  • Close to Medla and Chandrachur watchtowers

Watch out for

Weekend picnic crowds on the riverbank can be noisy, and rooms are basic for the higher price bands.

Is Murti Banani good for families

Yes. Children enjoy the riverbank and the forest setting, and the camp is close to watchtowers suited to short attention spans. Keep children away from the river's fast channels and inside the camp after dark, when elephants may pass nearby.
