The West Bengal tourism corporation's lodge on Bhanu Sarani, just above Chowrasta. Plain rooms, government rates, a central location and on clear mornings a direct view towards Kangchenjunga. Book online on the WBTDCL site, up to about 180 days ahead.

Many Kolkata families first saw Darjeeling from the old Darjeeling Tourist Lodge, now listed by WBTDCL as the Darjeeling Tourism Property. It stands on Bhanu Sarani, the road that runs from Chowrasta round Observatory Hill, so the Mall, Glenary's and the ridge are a five-minute walk. Rooms are simple and clean in the government style, with heaters available in winter.

The main reasons to stay are the location and the rate. Listed room rates were around ₹2,300–3,200 a night at our last check, well below private hotels with a similar position. Service is functional rather than warm, and the furniture is dated. Book on the official WBTDCL website or at the corporation's office on BBD Bag in Kolkata, and check current rates before you travel.

Why we like it

  • Government rates a few minutes from Chowrasta
  • Mountain-facing position on Bhanu Sarani
  • Bookable online months ahead, useful for Puja holidays

Watch out for

Rooms and bathrooms are dated, service is government style, and vehicles cannot always stop at the door, so expect a short walk with bags.

Questions people ask

Good to know

How do I book the WBTDC tourist lodge in Darjeeling

Book on the official WBTDCL website, which lists it as the Darjeeling Tourism Property, or at the West Bengal Tourism office at 3/2 BBD Bag East Road, Kolkata. Bookings open up to about 180 days ahead. Puja, Christmas and May dates sell out first, so book as soon as your leave is fixed. Carry the same photo ID used to book.

Is the Darjeeling tourist lodge close to the Mall

Yes. It is on Bhanu Sarani, a few minutes on foot from Chowrasta and the Mall. That saves taxi fares, because most of Darjeeling's sights for a first evening, including Observatory Hill, Glenary's and the Mall shops, are within walking distance. Cars may have to drop you a short distance away.

Does the WBTDC Darjeeling lodge have heating

Room heaters are usually available in winter, sometimes for an extra charge. Darjeeling nights fall to 2–5 °C in December and January, and the building is old, so ask for a heater and extra blankets at check-in. Hot water is generally by geyser. Check current arrangements with the lodge before you travel.
