A heritage boutique hotel in Kurseong, built around The Hermitage, the old home of Percy John Cochrane, a British-era magistrate. Antique-furnished rooms, a tea-led restaurant called Chai Country, a spa and views over tea slopes.

Cochrane Place began as The Hermitage, the residence of Percy John Cochrane, a magistrate in Kurseong in the early twentieth century. The Arora family restored it and opened it as a hotel in 2004. Rooms are individually furnished with antiques, old prints and four-poster beds in some, and the newer wings follow the same style.

Tea is the theme. The restaurant, Chai Country, offers a long tea list alongside Anglo-Indian and local dishes, and the staff can arrange visits to nearby gardens such as Makaibari and Castleton. It is a calm, comfortable base for two nights in Kurseong, closer to Bagdogra and NJP than Darjeeling, which makes it a good first or last night of a hill trip.

Why we like it

  • Heritage house with antique-furnished rooms
  • Tea-focused restaurant and garden visits nearby
  • Closer to Bagdogra and NJP than Darjeeling

Watch out for

It is outside Kurseong town on Pankhabari Road, so you depend on a car for most outings.

Yes. It is built around The Hermitage, once the home of Percy John Cochrane, a British-era magistrate in Kurseong, and was restored as a hotel by the Arora family in 2004. Rooms are furnished with antiques and old prints, and newer wings follow the same style.

Can Cochrane Place arrange tea garden visits

Yes. The hotel's restaurant, Chai Country, is built around tea, and staff can arrange visits to nearby estates such as Makaibari and Castleton. Factory visits depend on the season and the plucking schedule, and some factories close to visitors on certain days, so check current status before you travel.
