forest lodge · Lolegaon, Kalimpong
Lolegaon Eco Tourism Centre (WBFDC)
budget
Lolegaon's government lodge gives you forest-department prices in a village that otherwise runs on small private homestays. Rooms are plain and clean, with attached bathrooms, and the corporation lists deluxe, super deluxe and VIP categories at slightly different rates. Meals come from the canteen. The heritage forest with its hanging canopy walk is a short walk away, and Jhandi Dara, the sunrise viewpoint, is a few kilometres up the road by car.
We like it for budget couples and small groups who want a quiet night in the cryptomeria and pine forest without paying resort rates. It is not luxurious and service is government-paced, so manage expectations. Book through the WBFDC website, which opens bookings about three months ahead; the official postal address is Gitdabling, the post office that serves Lolegaon. Tariffs may change, so check current rates when you book.
Why we like it
- Government tariff in a village with few rooms
- Walking distance to the canopy walk in the heritage forest
- Canteen meals included in the routine of the lodge
Watch out for
Service is basic and the canteen has a short menu; hot water may be by bucket at busy times.
Questions people ask
Good to know
How far is the Lolegaon forest lodge from the canopy walk
It is a short walk, usually under 15 minutes, to the heritage forest where the canopy walk runs among the trees. Ask the reception for the path. The canopy walk has a small entry fee and is open in daylight hours; it may close in heavy rain or for repairs, so check at the forest gate on the day.
Can I book the Lolegaon lodge without a car
Yes, but plan the transfer. Shared jeeps run between Kalimpong and Lolegaon, mostly in the morning from Kalimpong and in the early morning from Lolegaon, and take about two and a half hours. Beyond that, you need a reserved car. For Jhandi Dara at dawn you will need to book a local car the evening before through the lodge or a homestay owner.
Is the WBFDC Lolegaon lodge good for families
It suits families who are happy with simple rooms and canteen meals. Rooms are spacious enough for an extra bed in some categories, and the forest walks are gentle. There is no play area, room service is limited, and nights are cold from November to March. Carry snacks for children, as shops in Lolegaon close early.
