The Elgin Silver Oaks dates to the early 1930s, when it was built as a home for a Bengal jute magnate; it later belonged to an architect before becoming a hotel. The Elgin group, which also runs heritage hotels in Darjeeling, Pelling and Gangtok, has kept it small: about 25 rooms over two floors, each with views across the gardens to the mountains or the Teesta valley. Gazebos dot the lawns, and the restaurant serves Indian, Asian and European dishes.
This is our choice for couples and senior travellers who want heritage comfort in the middle of town. Haat Bazaar is about 700 m away and the Lepcha Museum about 1.5 km. Rooms are traditional rather than modern, and the hotel has a library and attentive old-school service. Elgin often sells packages with meals included, which can be better value than room-only rates; check current rates when you book.
