A family-run guesthouse of cottages set in about two acres of gardens and an orchid nursery, about 1 km below Kalimpong town. Home-cooked dinners, spring water, a library and a long literary history, at homestay prices.

Holumba Haven is a family property that opened to guests in 2004. Sixteen rooms in six cottages are scattered among botanical gardens where the family grows orchids, and the related nursery, Nurseryman's Haven, has been in the business of Himalayan plants for decades. The oldest building, Magnolia Cottage, was a retreat for writers, including the English Buddhist teacher Sangharakshita, who wrote his memoir Facing Mount Kanchenjunga there.

We send people here who want a homestay feel with private cottages. Dinners are served at set times in the dining room, using vegetables from the organic garden. It is walking distance from town, so you can do Kalimpong's sights on foot. Decor is old-fashioned and bathrooms are simple, which is part of the price. Rates vary by cottage; check current rates and meal plans directly with the hosts when you book.

Why we like it

  • Cottages inside an orchid garden and nursery
  • Home-cooked dinners from the property's own garden
  • Walkable to town, about 1 km

Watch out for

Decor is dated and some bathrooms have hand-held showers only; older cottages creak at night.

Questions people ask

Good to know

Can non-guests visit the orchid nursery at Holumba

The family's nursery has historically welcomed plant buyers and visitors by arrangement, but it is a working business and a private home. Ask in advance, ideally through your hotel or the hosts, rather than walking in. Spring, from March to May, is when most orchids are in flower. Plant export needs permits, so buy only what you can legally carry.

Is Holumba Haven walking distance from Kalimpong town

Yes, it is about 1 km below the town centre, roughly a 15–20 minute walk, uphill on the way back. Taxis are easy to find for the return. Being slightly out of town keeps it quiet at night while leaving Haat Bazaar, the main road shops and the town monasteries within reach on foot.

Does Holumba Haven serve meals

Yes. Breakfast and dinner are cooked in the house kitchen, often with produce from the organic garden, and dinners are usually served at a set time in the dining room. Mention dietary needs when you book. Lunch is easy to find in town, about 15 minutes away on foot, which suits a day of sightseeing.
