Kalimpong's most famous address: the old Himalayan Hotel, opened by the family of David Macdonald, the Tibet trade agent, and now run by Mayfair as a spa resort. Heritage cottages, newer rooms, a pool, a spa and lawns facing Kanchenjunga, about 1 km from Haat Bazaar.

David Macdonald served as interpreter on the British expedition to Tibet in 1904 and later as British trade agent in Tibet. When he retired in the 1920s he settled in Kalimpong and turned part of his family home into the Himalayan Hotel. For decades it was the waystation for Everest climbers and Tibet travellers; Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary are among the names linked to it. Today the property is run by Mayfair Hotels and Resorts, with the old stone house at its heart and a larger modern wing around it.

Expect a full resort: heritage rooms with wooden floors, larger new suites, a spa, outdoor pool, restaurant and wide lawns facing the mountains. It is the top end of Kalimpong's market and priced accordingly. We book the heritage rooms for guests who care about the story, and the newer suites for families who want space. Rates move with season and occupancy; check current rates when you book.

Why we like it

  • Built around the historic Himalayan Hotel of the Macdonald family
  • Full spa, pool and restaurant on site
  • Walkable to Haat Bazaar and the town centre

Watch out for

The large modern wing has diluted the old-hotel feel; ask specifically for heritage rooms if that is why you are coming.

Questions people ask

Good to know

Is Mayfair Kalimpong the old Himalayan Hotel

Yes. The resort stands on the property of the Himalayan Hotel, opened by David Macdonald's family after his retirement in the 1920s, and Mayfair has kept the old house as the heritage core while adding new wings, a spa and a pool. If the history matters to you, book a heritage room in the original building and ask to see the old photographs.

How much does Mayfair Kalimpong cost per night

Expect roughly ₹14,000–28,000 per room night, indicative for 2026, depending on room type, season and meal plan. Heritage rooms and suites cost more, and peak weeks such as Durga Puja, Christmas and New Year carry the highest rates. Weekday stays in January, February, June to September and early December are usually the cheapest.

Is Mayfair Kalimpong walking distance from the market

Yes. It is about 1 km from Haat Bazaar and the main road shops, an easy walk downhill and a steeper one back. The hotel can arrange cars for longer sightseeing. Being in town makes it convenient for an evening stroll, momos and shopping, unlike resorts several kilometres out.
