West and South Sikkim · tour package Nº 98771
Ravangla, Temi tea and Namchi
South Sikkim is the easy half of the state. Drives are short and the big sights sit within 30 km of each other. We start at Ravangla, at about 2,100 m, the starting point for the trek to Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary, where a 130-foot Buddha was consecrated by the 14th Dalai Lama in 2013. The next night is in the Temi tea estate, laid out in 1969 under the last Chogyal. The last is in Namchi, district headquarters, with two hilltop statues you can see from far down the valley.
This trip suits families, seniors and anyone with three days and no appetite for 6-hour drives. The longest drive is the first, about 120 km and 4.5–5 hours from Siliguri; the shortest is under an hour. Budget uses simple town hotels and Cherry Resort, a government building inside the tea estate. Comfort adds Mt. Narsing Village Resort and a private SUV. October to December gives the clearest views of Kangchenjunga and Narsing. In November, Himalayan cherry trees flower along the Temi approach.

Day by day
The timetable
- Day1
Siliguri to Ravangla and Buddha Park
Your car meets you at NJP, Bagdogra or Siliguri and follows the Teesta to Melli, where you enter Sikkim, then climbs through the hills to Ravangla at about 2,100 m. Foreign nationals show or collect their Restricted Area Permit at Melli. After check-in we go to Buddha Park, also called Tathagata Tsal. The 130-foot statue was built between 2006 and 2013 for the 2,550th birth anniversary of the Buddha, with Mount Narsing behind it. Entry is ₹50–100, indicative. Stay for the late afternoon light, when crowds thin and the statue glows.
- Day2
Ralang Monastery, then the Temi tea estate
Ravangla means, roughly, the pass where wild sheep were reared. After breakfast we drive about 6 km to Ralang. The large new monastery, Palchen Choeling, was built in 1995 by the 12th Gyaltsab Rinpoche of the Kagyu school; the older Karma Rabtenling stands nearby. Ravangla also has the Kunphenling Tibetan settlement, set up in 1978. Then about 20 km to Temi. Check in at Cherry Resort, inside the estate, and walk the tea rows in the afternoon. The estate covers about 177 hectares on slopes running down from the Tendong range.
- Day3
Temi morning, Samdruptse and Char Dham
Walk the estate early, before the day's haze, on paths between the tea rows. Temi was set up in 1969 under Palden Thondup Namgyal, the last Chogyal, and is run by the state's tea board; it is certified organic. Ask at the estate if you want to buy tea to take home. Then about 18 km to Namchi, whose name means sky high. We visit Samdruptse, where a 135-foot Guru Padmasambhava was completed in 2004, and Siddhesvara Dham, called Char Dham, about 5 km from town. Entry at each is ₹20–100, indicative.
- Day4
Namchi back to the plains
A slow breakfast. If you leave by 9 am you have time for a short stop on the way down; ask your driver about Mamley Stromatolite Park near Namchi, declared a National Geological Monument in 2014 for its ancient algal fossils in dolomite. The road then drops to Melli and follows the Teesta to Siliguri. On a clear road you reach NJP or Bagdogra by early afternoon, so a 3 pm flight is usually safe. In monsoon allow extra time, because slides can close the Teesta road. Check current status before you travel.

Questions people ask
About this package
How tall is the Buddha statue at Ravangla
The Buddha at Buddha Park, Ravangla, is 130 feet tall, about 40 m. It was built between 2006 and 2013 for the 2,550th birth anniversary of the Buddha and consecrated by the 14th Dalai Lama on 25 March 2013. The park, also called Tathagata Tsal, sits inside the Rabong Gompa complex with Mount Narsing behind. Entry is ₹50–100, indicative; check current status before you travel.
Can we stay inside Temi Tea Garden
Yes. Cherry Resort sits inside the Temi estate. It is a government building, once the Yatri Niwas, now run privately on lease, and named for the Himalayan cherry trees along the approach, which flower in November. Rooms are simple to comfortable rather than luxurious. It is the only stay inside the estate, so book early for weekends and holidays.
When is the best time to visit Temi Tea Garden
October to December gives clear views across the estate to Kangchenjunga, and November adds the cherry blossom on the approach road. March to May is the plucking season, with green slopes and a little haze. From June to September tea grows fast but rain and slides make the roads slow. Walking among the tea rows is free all year.
What is Char Dham in Namchi
Char Dham, formally Siddhesvara Dham, is a Hindu pilgrimage complex on Solophok hill, about 5 km from Namchi. It has a 108-foot statue of Shiva, an 18-foot Kirateshwar, and replicas of the four dhams and the 12 jyotirlingas, so pilgrims can see all of them in one place. Entry is ₹50–100, indicative; allow 1.5–2 hours. Check current status before you travel.
How far is Ravangla from Namchi and Temi
Ravangla to Namchi is about 27 km, roughly an hour by road. Ravangla to Temi and Namchi to Temi are each about 16–20 km, 45 minutes to an hour. That is why this loop works so well in three nights: no drive after the first day is longer than 2 hours. Shared jeeps between Ravangla and Namchi cost ₹80–120 a seat, indicative.
Is this trip good for elderly parents
Yes, it is one of our easiest trips. Drives after day one are short, Buddha Park and Char Dham have paved paths, and the highest point is Ravangla at about 2,100 m. Buddha Park and Samdruptse involve some steps; Char Dham has long walkways. Ravangla is cold at night from December to February, so pack warm layers and ask for a heater.
Can we see Kangchenjunga from Ravangla
Yes, on clear mornings, mostly from October to February. From Ravangla you see Narsing, Kabru and the Kangchenjunga range in clear weather. Haze usually hides the peaks by mid-morning in spring, and cloud covers them through the monsoon. For the best chance, be outside by 6 am. Mt. Narsing Village Resort's upper cottages face the range.
How do we reach Ravangla by shared jeep
Shared jeeps leave Siliguri for Ravangla through the morning, about ₹350–450 a seat, and Gangtok to Ravangla costs about ₹250–350, both indicative for 2026. The ride from Siliguri takes 4.5–5 hours. Jeeps fill and leave, so arrive at the stand by 8 am. For this loop a local car for the Temi and Namchi days saves time.
Can we add Pelling to this trip
Yes, easily. Pelling is about 50 km from Ravangla, 2–2.5 hours via Legship and Kewzing. Add two nights in Pelling after Ravangla for Pemayangtse, Rabdentse and the Kangchenjunga dawn, then continue to Temi and Namchi. The trip becomes 5 nights and the last drive from Namchi to Siliguri stays short. Ask us for a revised plan and fares.
