North Sikkim seasons: snow, flowers or clear skies

By Darjeeling Tour Plan Desk

North Sikkim has three good seasons and one bad one. Come from December to March for snow at Lachung, late April and May for rhododendrons at Yumthang, and October to November for the clearest skies and open roads to Gurudongmar. Avoid June to August, when landslides close roads and permits are often suspended.

Three good seasons and one to avoid

The question we hear most from families planning North Sikkim is simple: snow or flowers? The honest answer is that you cannot have both at their best on the same trip, and that a third season, autumn, often beats both for clear views and reliable roads. Each season changes what you can see, which roads are open, what you pay and what you must pack.

Height explains most of it. Lachung and Lachen sit at about 2,700–2,750 m, Yumthang at 3,564 m, Zero Point at about 4,660 m and Gurudongmar at 5,430 m. Snow comes early and stays late at the top; flowers start low and climb the valley as spring moves up. And the monsoon, which brings most of Sikkim's rain between June and September, decides whether the roads hold at all. Since the October 2023 flood, closures can come in any month, so check current status before you travel.

Month by month at a glance

This table summarises what usually happens. Every year is a little different: a late snowfall can push flowers back by two weeks, and an early monsoon can close roads in May.

Snow season: December to March

For many families from the plains, Lachung in winter is the easiest place in India to touch deep snow. From about late December to early March the village and the road to Yumthang usually lie under white, and January and February are the most reliable months. The air is dry, the sky often a hard blue, and outside Christmas and New Year week, prices are among the lowest of the year.

The cost is cold and closures. Nights in Lachung fall to about −8 °C in January, so a room with a heater, heated mattress or electric blanket matters more than the view. A heavy fall can block the road above Chungthang or to Yumthang for a day or two. Zero Point is commonly closed from about mid-December, and the Lachen side, with Gurudongmar, is often shut by snow, so winter trips are usually Lachung only. Keep a spare day and hire boots and padded jackets in Lachung for ₹150–300 an item, indicative 2026.

Flower season: late April and May

The Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary, created in 1984, covers about 43 square km of the Lachung valley between roughly 3,000 and 3,700 m, and sources count two to four dozen rhododendron species. From late April through May the trees flower in red, pink, white, yellow and purple, with lower species opening first and higher ones later. Rhododendron niveum, Sikkim's state tree, grows here with magenta to lilac flower heads. Primulas and other alpine flowers follow on the meadows.

This is also the busiest time of the year. Hotels in Lachung often sell out in May, group seats fill a week ahead and prices are at their peak, especially in Indian summer school holidays. Cloud usually fills the valley by late morning, so leave Lachung by 5.30–6 am. From mid-May, pre-monsoon storms can bring landslides, as they did in 2025. For the best balance, we suggest the last week of April to the second week of May, with two nights in Lachung for two dawns in the sanctuary.

Clear skies: October and November

If your priority is seeing the mountains and reaching both valleys, autumn is the safest bet. After the monsoon the air is washed clean, and October is usually the clearest month of the year. Gurudongmar is open and not yet frozen, the maples and larches above Lachung turn red and gold, and the roads, though often under repair, are more reliable than at any other time.

Durga Puja and Diwali bring heavy demand from Kolkata and the rest of India, so book early or travel just after the holidays. November is colder, drier and quieter; Gurudongmar starts to freeze from the edges and is usually frozen over by late in the month, and early snow can fall on the high ground. It is our favourite month for budget travellers who pack properly for nights below zero in Lachen.

Autumn is also the best season for Kanchenjunga views on the way north. From Singhik, 4 km beyond Mangan, the peaks of the Kanchenjunga massif and Siniolchu stand clear across the Teesta valley on most October and November mornings, while in May they are often hidden by 8 am. If you can spare a night, the government Singhik Bungalow makes a quiet stop on the drive back from Lachung, and Indian citizens need no Protected Area Permit to stay there.

Monsoon and the reopening

From June to August, North Sikkim is at its riskiest. Heavy rain triggers landslides on the North Sikkim Highway, and permits for Lachung and Lachen are often suspended for weeks. In June 2025 slides cut roads to Lachen, Lachung and Chungthang and stranded more than 1,600 tourists. We do not sell North Sikkim trips in June and July. If you are in Sikkim then, stay low: Mangan, Phodong, Kabi Lungchok and, with care, Dzongu, where Tendong Lho Rumfaat is marked on 8 August.

September is the reopening month. In 2025 permits for Lachung, Yumthang and Zero Point resumed on 8 September, and in 2026 permits for Lachen resumed around 10–11 September. Rain usually eases in the second half of the month and the alpine meadows are at their greenest. Hotels discount to restart the season. Book the last ten days, not the first, and expect checkpost time limits and repair works.

What each season costs

Season changes the price as much as the view. In May, Puja week and Christmas to New Year, Lachung hotels charge their highest rates, group seats sell out days ahead and private cars cost more. A one-night Lachung group package that costs about ₹3,500 in January can cost ₹5,500 or more in mid-May, indicative 2026, and comfort hotels such as Le Coxy Resort sit at the top of their ₹4,500–8,000 range.

The cheapest working months are January and February outside New Year, the first half of March and the second half of November. Winter adds small costs, such as heater charges and boot hire, but saves far more on rooms. September is discounted too, as hotels restart after the monsoon, but road risk is the hidden cost. Whatever the month, keep a buffer day and refundable bookings, because a single closure can wipe out every saving.

So, snow or flowers

Match the season to the people travelling, not to the photographs you have seen. A short guide:

  • Families from the plains who want to play in snow: January or February, Lachung only, with a buffer day.
  • Nature lovers, birders and photographers: the last week of April to mid-May, two nights in Lachung.
  • First-timers who want both valleys and Gurudongmar: October or early November.
  • Budget travellers: the second half of November, early March, or January outside New Year.
  • Honeymooners: late November or February for quiet and cold, or early May for flowers if you book well ahead.
  • Seniors and small children: October, April or early May, when cold and closures are least severe; skip Gurudongmar.

Questions people ask

Good to know

What is the best time to visit North Sikkim

October and November for clear skies and both valleys open, late April and May for rhododendrons at Yumthang, and December to March for snow at Lachung. Avoid June to August, when landslides close roads and permits are often suspended. September is a reopening month; aim for its last ten days. Check current status before you travel in any season.

When can I see snow in North Sikkim

Snow usually lies at Lachung and on the Yumthang road from about late December to early March, with January and February the most reliable. Yumthang often keeps snow into late March. Zero Point has snow for most of the year but is commonly closed from mid-December. No date is guaranteed, and fresh falls can close roads for a day or two.

When do rhododendrons bloom in Yumthang

From late April through May, with lower species first and higher species later. Exact timing shifts by a week or two with winter snow and spring temperatures. The last week of April to the second week of May is usually a good window. Start early, because cloud fills the valley by late morning in spring.

Is Gurudongmar Lake frozen in winter

Usually, yes. The lake normally starts to freeze from the edges in November and is frozen over from about late November to April, thawing at the edges by late May. In winter the Lachen road is also often closed by snow, so a frozen-lake visit is uncertain. Late November and late March offer the best chance. Check current status before you travel.

Can I visit North Sikkim in the monsoon

It is not advisable. From June to August, landslides frequently close the roads to Lachung and Lachen and permits are often suspended for weeks, as happened in 2025. If you are in Sikkim then, visit permit-free places on the lower highway such as Kabi Lungchok, Phodong and Mangan instead. Check current status before you travel.

Is October good for North Sikkim

Yes, it is one of the best months. Skies are clearest after the monsoon, Gurudongmar is open and not yet frozen, and the maples and larches above Lachung begin to turn. Durga Puja and Diwali bring crowds and higher prices, so book early or travel just after the holidays. Nights fall to near zero in Lachung.

How cold is Lachung in each season

Roughly −8 to 5 °C in January, 2 to 15 °C in April, 10 to 19 °C in July and 3 to 15 °C in October, indicative ranges. Yumthang is colder, and Gurudongmar is well below freezing at dawn for much of the year. Pack layers in every season, with a down jacket from October to April.

Can I see snow and rhododendrons on the same trip

Sometimes, in a narrow window. In the last ten days of March or early April, snow often remains at Yumthang and on the peaks while the first rhododendrons open lower in the valley. You will not get peak flowers and deep snow together. In May, snow is usually only on the peaks and at Zero Point, if it is open.

Which month is cheapest for North Sikkim

July and August are cheapest but unreliable. For a working trip at low prices, choose January and February outside New Year, early March or the second half of November. May, Puja week in October and Christmas to New Year are the most expensive, with Lachung hotels often full and group seats booked ahead.
