North Sikkim group tour or private car: real costs

By Darjeeling Tour Plan Desk

For one or two travellers, a shared group package from Gangtok is the cheapest way into North Sikkim, at about ₹6,000–9,000 per person for the two-night Lachen and Lachung loop, indicative 2026. From four people up, a private car costs about the same per head and gives far more freedom. Here are the numbers and the checks.

Why you cannot just take a jeep

Elsewhere in Sikkim you can ride shared jeeps between towns and sort out your own hotel. North Sikkim works differently. Lachung, Yumthang, Zero Point, Lachen, Thangu and Gurudongmar lie in a protected zone near the Tibetan border. Indian citizens need a Protected Area Permit and foreign nationals a Restricted Area Permit, and both are filed only through registered Sikkim tour operators. You must travel in a registered local vehicle with a local driver. Self-drive is not allowed, and shared jeeps stop at the checkposts near Mangan.

So the question every traveller faces in Gangtok is not whether to pay an operator, but how: a seat in a shared group package, or a whole vehicle hired for your party. Both options include the permit. The difference is who you share the car, the hotel and the timetable with. Rules and vehicle rates change, so check current status before you travel.

What a group package includes

A typical Gangtok group package for North Sikkim bundles five things into one per-person price: permit processing, a seat in a Bolero, Xylo, Sumo or similar vehicle shared with other travellers, a room in a family hotel in Lachung or Lachen, dinner and breakfast in the north, and the driver's time for the sightseeing in the plan. Most leave Gangtok at about 10–11 am once permits are ready, and return to Gangtok in the evening of the last day.

What is usually not included matters as much. Lunch on the drive days, Zero Point, room heaters in winter, snow-gear hire and the Gangtok hotel before and after are almost always extra. Some packages put two couples in one room or seat you in the back row of a jeep for 6–7 hours. Ask before you pay.

The numbers for 2, 4 and 6 travellers

The table compares per-person costs for the classic two-night Lachen and Lachung loop from Gangtok, with Gurudongmar and Yumthang, and for a one-night Lachung trip. Private car figures add a family hotel with breakfast and dinner at about ₹3,000–5,000 a room night, rooms shared two to a room, and permit processing at about ₹200–300 per person. All figures are indicative 2026 and rise in May, Puja week and New Year.

The pattern is clear. A private car costs the same whether two people ride in it or six, so it becomes cheaper per head the more seats you fill. A group seat is priced per person, so its cost per head never falls. For couples, a group seat wins on price. For a family of four, the gap is small. For six, the private car can be cheaper.

When a group seat is the right call

Choose a group seat if you are travelling alone or as a couple, if you are healthy and flexible, and if your main goal is to see Yumthang or Gurudongmar for the least money. Students and young travellers often enjoy the company: you share the 4 am start to Gurudongmar with the same eight people and end up eating dinner together in Lachen.

A group seat also suits travellers who book late. Operators in Gangtok run departures most days in season and can usually fit two more people into a vehicle leaving in a day or two, once your permit is filed. Just remember that the group goes at the pace of its slowest member, and that one unwell traveller can turn the whole jeep round.

When a private car is worth it

Choose a private car if you are four or more, if you are travelling with small children or older parents, or if you want to choose your own hotel. It also makes sense for photographers who want to stop when the light is right, for honeymooners who want to sleep in after Gurudongmar, and for anyone adding a second night in Lachen or Lachung, which group packages rarely offer.

A private car also matters for health at altitude. If one person in your party feels unwell at Thangu, a private driver can take you down at once. In a group jeep, the driver has to weigh one passenger's headache against seven others who have paid to see the lake. For families with seniors, that alone justifies the extra cost.

Questions to ask before you pay

Whichever you choose, get the answers in writing on WhatsApp or email before you transfer money. A good operator answers all of these without hesitation.

  • Is the operator registered with Sikkim Tourism, and in whose name is the permit filed?
  • What vehicle, how many passengers in it, and which seat will we have?
  • Which hotel in Lachung or Lachen, and is the room twin or shared with others?
  • Which meals are included, and is a packed breakfast given for the dawn start?
  • Are heaters, Zero Point and lunches extra, and how much?
  • What happens if the road is closed or the permit is refused: refund, credit or new date?
  • What time do we leave Gangtok and return, given the 4 pm limit at the Toong checkpost?

A middle way: custom small groups

There is a third option that many travellers do not know to ask for. Some Gangtok operators will put together a small private group: two couples, or a family and two friends, sharing one car on a plan you agree together. You split the vehicle cost four or five ways, you choose the hotel, and you can add a second night in Lachen or skip Zero Point without negotiating with strangers. On the two-night loop, four people sharing a car and family hotels pay about ₹7,000–10,500 each, indicative 2026, close to group-seat prices.

The easiest way to build such a group is before you arrive. Travellers meet on forums, in hostels in Gangtok or through their hotels, and operators will often match two couples who want the same dates. Agree in writing who pays what, what happens if one person falls ill and the car must turn back, and whether Zero Point is in or out. Small groups work best when everyone wants roughly the same pace, so talk about the 4 am Gurudongmar start before you commit.

Red flags and how to protect yourself

Be wary of anyone in Siliguri or Gangtok who promises a same-day North Sikkim permit; permits are filed ahead and not issued on the spot. Be wary too of prices well below the ranges here, which often hide a cramped back seat, a shared room or a hotel short of Lachen. Do not hand over original passports or Aadhaar cards; operators need copies and photographs, not originals.

Pay a deposit rather than the full amount, and keep the operator's registration details. Since the 2023 flood, closures have been frequent, and the best operators say plainly how they handle them: a new date, a switch to Lachung only, or a partial refund. Check current status before you travel, and pick the operator who is honest about the road over the one with the cheapest price.

Questions people ask

Good to know

How much is a North Sikkim group package from Gangtok

In 2026 a shared group package for the two-night Lachen and Lachung loop costs about ₹6,000–9,000 per person, and a one-night Lachung trip about ₹3,500–5,500, indicative. Both usually include the permit, a vehicle seat, a family hotel and breakfast and dinner. Lunches, Zero Point and heaters are usually extra. Prices rise in May, Puja week and New Year.

How much does a private car for North Sikkim cost

About ₹16,000–22,000 per vehicle for the two-night Lachen and Lachung loop and ₹9,000–13,000 for a one-night Lachung trip from Gangtok, indicative 2026, before hotels. A Bolero, Xylo or Scorpio carries six to eight; an Innova is more comfortable for four to six. Rates rise in peak weeks and with fuel prices.

Is a group tour or private car better for a family of four

For four people the cost per head is close: about ₹6,000–9,000 each in group seats against about ₹7,000–10,500 each with a private car and family hotels on the two-night loop, indicative 2026. Most families find the private car worth the small extra, especially with children or seniors, for control over timing, stops and hotel choice.

Can I self-drive to Lachung or Lachen

No. Tourists cannot self-drive beyond the North Sikkim permit checkposts. You must travel in a registered local vehicle with a local driver, booked through a registered Sikkim tour operator who files your permit. You can drive yourself as far as Mangan, but most travellers leave their own car in Gangtok.

How many people share a group tour vehicle

Usually eight to ten in a Bolero, Sumo or similar vehicle, fewer in a Xylo or Innova. Ask the operator how many seats will be filled and where you will sit, because the back row on a 6–7 hour drive is hard on anyone prone to motion sickness. Some operators charge a little more for the front seat.

Can a group package include a second night in Lachen

Rarely. Group packages run on fixed plans, usually one night in Lachen and one in Lachung. If you want a second night in Lachen to acclimatise before Gurudongmar, which we recommend for seniors, you need a private car or a custom booking. The extra night costs about ₹2,000–4,000 per room with meals, indicative 2026, plus a day of vehicle hire.

What happens if the road closes on a group tour

It depends on the operator. Good operators offer a new date, a switch to Lachung only, or a partial refund of the hotel and vehicle share. Permit fees are often not refunded. Get the policy in writing before paying and take refundable bookings for flights and Gangtok hotels. Since the 2023 flood, closures are common; check current status before you travel.

Is it safe to book a North Sikkim tour on arrival in Gangtok

Yes, if you allow time. Many travellers book with a registered operator on MG Marg or through their hotel. Permits need a day or two and are not issued the same day, so book on day one for a departure on day two or three. Ask to see the operator's registration and never hand over original ID.

Do foreigners have to join a group for North Sikkim

Foreign nationals usually need to travel in a group of at least two, through an approved operator, with a Restricted Area Permit and the North Sikkim permit. That group can be your own private party of two in a private car. Foreign nationals are not allowed at Gurudongmar and usually turn at Thangu. Check current status before you travel.
