A comfortable hotel on the slope of the Phobjikha valley, about 3 km from Gangtey Goenpa, with wood-stove rooms, picture windows over the crane marsh and a restaurant built around a central stove. Ideal for crane season.

Dewachen stands at the edge of the Phobjikha valley, close to the Black Mountains National Park and about 3 km from Gangtey Goenpa. The building is traditional in style, and the rooms are heated with wood-burning stoves, with hot water bottles supplied on cold nights. Picture windows, and in many rooms balconies, face out over the valley, so in winter you can see the cranes' feeding grounds from your room.

The restaurant has a central stove and wide windows on the valley, and serves Bhutanese and international food. There is a bar, a hot stone bath and a small gift shop. Staff can arrange walks, horse riding and visits to the monastery and the crane information centre. It is the comfortable middle choice in a valley where the alternatives are simple farmhouses or the expensive Gangtey Lodge and Amankora.

Why we like it

  • Wood-stove rooms with valley views
  • Close to the crane feeding grounds
  • Hot stone bath on site

Watch out for

Wood-stove heating dies down by early morning in midwinter, and the valley can have power cuts; pack thermals and a torch.

Questions people ask

Good to know

Can you see the cranes from Dewachen Hotel

Often, yes. The hotel faces the Phobjikha valley and its marsh, where the black-necked cranes feed from November to mid-February, so many rooms and the restaurant have a view over their grounds. Binoculars help. For close watching, go to the crane information centre or the road edge at dawn.

Is Dewachen Hotel warm in winter

Rooms are heated with wood-burning stoves and hot water bottles are provided, which keeps them comfortable in the evening. By early morning the stove burns low and nights outside fall to −5 °C or lower, so pack thermals. Ask staff to relight the stove if needed.

How far is Dewachen Hotel from Gangtey Monastery

About 3 km, a few minutes by car or a pleasant 45-minute walk. The Gangtey nature trail and the Black-necked Crane Information Centre are also close. The hotel is on the valley slope near the Black Mountains National Park boundary.
