One of Bhutan's oldest hotels, built in 1974 for guests at the Fourth King's coronation, set in about 28 acres of blue pine on a hill above Paro. Traditional buildings, cottages and a spa with hot stone baths, at a mid-range price.

Hotel Olathang opened in 1974 to house the foreign guests invited to the coronation of the Fourth King, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, when Bhutan had almost no hotels. It stands on a hill about 5 km above Paro town, in some 28 acres of blue pine forest, with a main building around a courtyard and cottage rooms scattered through the grounds. The architecture is traditional Bhutanese, with painted woodwork and sloping roofs.

Rooms are comfortable rather than modern, which is part of the appeal and the price. The restaurant serves Bhutanese, Indian, Chinese and Continental food, and the Dewa Spa offers the Bhutanese hot stone bath, massage and a sauna. From the grounds you look down over the Paro valley and airport. It is a good base for the Tiger's Nest hike, 20–30 minutes away by car, and for the drive over Chele La to Haa.

Why we like it

  • Built for the 1974 coronation; real Bhutanese history
  • Pine-forest setting with valley views
  • Hot stone bath in the hotel spa

Watch out for

Some older rooms show their age and heating varies by block; ask for a renovated room or a cottage in winter.

How far is Hotel Olathang from Paro town and the airport

Does Hotel Olathang have a hot stone bath

Yes. The hotel's Dewa Spa offers the traditional Bhutanese hot stone bath along with massage, sauna and steam. Book it a few hours ahead so the stones can be heated. It is a good way to end the Tiger's Nest day; prices are higher than at a farmhouse.
