A long-running certified 3-star hotel on Zhung Lam, about 100 m from the Bhutan Gate. It is the practical first night of a road trip: walk to immigration, eat on the main street and leave early for Thimphu.

Hotel Druk sits on Zhung Lam, Phuentsholing's main street, roughly 100 m from the gate that divides the town from Jaigaon. It belongs to the Druk Hotels group, which also runs the Hotel Druk in Thimphu, and is a Department of Tourism-certified 3-star property, so it meets the rule that tourists must stay in certified hotels. Rooms are plain and clean, with air conditioning, which matters in a town that passes 35 °C in summer.

The location is the reason to stay. You can walk to the pedestrian terminal for your entry permit, to the banks and to the restaurants on the main street, and leave early for the 5–6 hour drive to Thimphu without crossing town. The in-house restaurant serves Indian, Chinese and Bhutanese food. On the way out of Bhutan it also works as a last night before the drive back to Siliguri or Bagdogra.

Why we like it

  • About 100 m from the Bhutan Gate and immigration
  • Certified 3-star, so valid for tourist itineraries
  • Air conditioning for Phuentsholing's heat

Watch out for

Rooms facing Zhung Lam can hear street and border traffic in the evening; ask for a room at the back.
