Questions people ask
Good to know
Is January a good time to visit North Sikkim?
January is deep winter. Lachung usually has snow, and the road to Yumthang is open on most days only as far as the snow allows. Lachen and Gurudongmar are often blocked after snowfall, and the lake is frozen solid. Days are clear and cold; nights in unheated rooms drop well below zero. It is a good month for a snow trip to Lachung if you accept that a fresh fall can close the road for a day or two.
What is the weather like in North Sikkim in January?
Lachung −8 to 5 °C, dry, snow on the ground. Conditions differ by altitude and coast, so check the forecast for each stop a week before you travel.
Where should we go in North Sikkim in January?
We suggest Lachung, Yumthang Valley, Phodong. Pick a hotel with heated mattresses or electric blankets and confirm it in writing.
