Yangsum Heritage Farm
premium
Yangsum is a working farm first and a guesthouse second, which is exactly its charm. The family house dates back to the 1800s and was remodelled in 1966; rooms are wood-panelled in Tibetan style with attached bathrooms. Around it, the land runs through cardamom, oranges, avocados, vegetables and patches of mixed forest with alder, chestnut, magnolia and rhododendron. Guests are welcome to walk the land and see what is in season.
Days are simple: breakfast from the farm, a walk to the Rinchenpong monastery and its rare Ati Buddha image, an afternoon on forest trails or with the farm work, and a Sikkimese dinner in the evening. Kangchenjunga rises across the valley on clear mornings. It costs more than a village homestay because meals, space and hosting are part of the stay. Book directly and well ahead.
Why we like it
- A real family farm with home-grown, organic meals
- Wood-panelled rooms in an old Sikkimese farmhouse
- Walks to Rinchenpong monastery and Kaluk's viewpoints
Watch out for
It is remote by design: you need a car to get there, evenings are quiet with little nightlife, and rooms are few, so book well ahead.
Questions people ask
Good to know
How do I get to Yangsum Heritage Farm
Yangsum lies near Rinchenpong in Soreng district, about 40 km and 1.5–2 hours from Pelling or roughly 5 hours by road from Siliguri. A reserved car is the easy option. Budget travellers can take a shared jeep to Rinchenpong or Kaluk from Jorethang or Gyalshing and ask the farm to collect them; confirm timings ahead.
Are meals included at Yangsum Heritage Farm
Most stays are booked with meals, and the food is a big part of the experience: breakfast and dinner made largely from the farm's own produce, Sikkimese in style. Rinchenpong has few restaurants, so plan to eat at the farm. Mention dietary needs when you book, as the kitchen cooks for a small number of guests.
What is there to do around Yangsum Heritage Farm
Walk the farm and its forest trails, visit Rinchenpong Monastery (built in 1730) with its Ati Buddha image, watch sunrise over Kangchenjunga from the Kaluk side, and hear the local tradition of the poisoned pond. Day trips reach Pelling, the Singshore Bridge and Uttarey. Most guests stay two or three nights and slow down.
