A long-running backpacker hotel in Upper Pelling, a few minutes' walk from the jeep stand. Plain, clean rooms, a small restaurant with home-style Sikkimese food, and Kangchenjunga views from the shared terraces on a clear morning.

Garuda has been the default first stop for budget travellers in Pelling for years, and for good reason. It sits right in Upper Pelling, so you can step off a shared jeep from Gyalshing, drop your bag and walk to the Sanga Choeling path or the Rabdentse gate without hiring a car. Rooms are simple but kept clean, with geysers and warm blankets in winter.

The kitchen is the quiet strength here. Ask for the Sikkimese thali, a churpi soup or a plate of vegetable momos, and you will eat well for a few hundred rupees. The staff are used to trekkers and solo travellers and will help you find shared cars to Yuksom or Khecheopalri. Online rates can run higher than what you are quoted at the desk in the off-season, so it is worth calling first.

Why we like it

  • Upper Pelling location: walk to the jeep stand, cafés and the Sanga Choeling path
  • Good, cheap home-style food including a Sikkimese thali
  • Mountain views from the common terraces at dawn in Oct–Feb

Watch out for

It is an older building: some corners look tired, power backup can be limited and the cheaper rooms have no view.

Questions people ask

Good to know

How far is Hotel Garuda from the Pelling jeep stand

It is a few minutes' walk. Shared jeeps from Gyalshing and some direct ones from Siliguri and Gangtok drop passengers in Upper Pelling, and Garuda sits close to that main junction. That is a real saving: you do not need a taxi on arrival, and you can walk to the Sanga Choeling path and the Rabdentse gate on foot.

Do rooms at Hotel Garuda have a Kangchenjunga view

Some upper rooms do, but many budget rooms do not. The good news is that the common terraces face the range, so every guest can step out at sunrise on a clear morning between October and February. If a view from bed matters to you, ask for an upper-floor room when you book and expect to pay a little more.

Is Hotel Garuda good for solo travellers

Yes. It has long been a backpacker favourite, the rooms are cheap, the restaurant is a natural place to meet other travellers, and the staff can point you to shared cars for Yuksom, Khecheopalri or Rinchenpong. Splitting a sightseeing car with two or three people from the hotel can cut your day-trip cost by half or more.
