Hotel Yangrigang
budget
Yuksom is a small place and most of what you need lies along one road. Yangrigang sits in the middle of it, which makes it handy for trekkers who must collect permits, meet a guide and buy last-minute gloves before the climb to Sachen. Rooms are simple, with attached bathrooms and hot water, and the restaurant serves dal-bhat, thukpa and momos. It is the sort of place where your boots dry by the door and breakfast can be packed the night before.
For non-trekkers it works as a base for two quiet days: the walk to the Norbugang coronation throne and Kathok Lake, the hour's climb to Dubdi Monastery, and a day trip to Tashiding. Book ahead in October and in April–May, when trekking groups fill Yuksom; outside those months you can often walk in and ask. Rates here stay modest even in season, so it suits travellers who would rather spend on a guide or a good porter than on a fancy room. Pay in cash where you can.
Why we like it
- Main-road location close to the jeep stand and trekking agencies
- Walking distance to Norbugang, Kathok Lake and the Dubdi trail
- Budget rates and a restaurant that is used to early trek starts
Watch out for
Rooms are basic and Yuksom has occasional power cuts and patchy mobile data, so carry a torch and download maps before you arrive.
Questions people ask
Good to know
Is Hotel Yangrigang a good base for the Goecha La trek
Yes, for the nights before and after the trek. It is on the main road near the trekking agencies and the forest checkpost, so collecting permits and meeting your guide is easy. Ask the hotel to keep your extra luggage while you are on the trail; most Yuksom hotels do this, but confirm it when you book.
Can I walk to Norbugang from Hotel Yangrigang
Yes. The Norbugang park with the coronation throne, the chorten and the Kathok Lake loop are all within an easy walk of the main road, roughly 10 to 20 minutes depending on where you start. Go early in the morning when the village is quiet and the light on the old cryptomeria above the throne is soft.
When should I book Yuksom hotels in advance
Book ahead for October, the busiest trekking month, and for April–May when rhododendrons bring trekkers and school-holiday families. In December–February and in the monsoon months Yuksom is quiet and you can usually walk in and bargain. Even then, call a day ahead if you will arrive after dark, because some hotels close their gates early.
