Walk about 4 km from the Hilley gate to the Barsey ridge on a gentle forest trail, through rhododendron in bloom from March to May. It takes 1.5–2 hours each way and suits most fit families. Start early for clear skies.

The walk starts at Hilley, the road head and main entry gate of the sanctuary, about 30 minutes by car above Okhrey. Pay the entry fee at the checkpost, usually ₹50–100 per person for Indian nationals and more for foreigners and cameras, indicative, 2026. Rules and fees change, so check current status before you travel. Toilets and tea stalls near the gate are basic and may be shut early in the day.

From the gate a broad trail climbs gently for about 4 km to Barsey, 1.5–2 hours at an easy pace. It runs through forests of rhododendron, oak and magnolia, with moss and ferns on the trunks. In bloom season, mid-March to April near the top, the trees flower in reds, pinks and whites. Some years bloom comes early or late, so ask in Okhrey the evening before.

At the top, the forest opens onto the Barsey ridge and the Guras Kunj hut. On clear mornings you see Kangchenjunga, Kabru and Pandim to the north. In spring, haze often hides them by 10 am, which is why we start at dawn. Rest, take photos, and walk back the same way. Carry all rubbish out with you and leave the flowers on the trees.

Questions people ask

Good to know

Is the Barsey trek difficult

No. The Hilley to Barsey walk is about 4 km one way on a wide, gently graded forest trail, taking 1.5–2 hours up. Most reasonably fit adults, children of about eight and above, and seniors who walk slowly can manage it. It can be muddy after rain, so wear shoes with grip.

What is the entry fee for Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary

Entry is usually about ₹50–100 per person for Indian nationals, with higher fees for foreign nationals and extra charges for cameras, indicative, 2026. Pay at the Hilley checkpost and keep the receipt. Fees change, so check current status before you travel.

When is the best time to see rhododendrons at Barsey

Rhododendrons flower from March to May, and the usual peak near the Barsey ridge at about 3,000 m is mid-March to April. Exact timing depends on the winter's weather. For clear mountain views rather than flowers, October to December is better.
