Besides Hilley, the sanctuary has entry points at Dentam and Soreng. These longer forest routes are quieter and more demanding, need a full day and a local guide, and suit fit walkers who want Barsey without the spring crowds.

Varsey Rhododendron Sanctuary has three entry points: Hilley, Dentam and Soreng. Almost everyone uses Hilley, because the road reaches it and the walk is only 4 km. Dentam lies to the north, on the road between Pelling and Uttarey near Singshore Bridge, and Soreng to the east. Routes from these sides climb longer distances through forest and see far fewer walkers, even in April.

Because these trails are long, little used and not always marked, we do not give fixed distances or timings; they depend on the exact route and your pace. Plan a full day, start at first light and go with a local guide who knows the paths. Many walkers combine one of these routes with the Hilley trail, entering one way and leaving the other, with a car waiting at the far end.

Carry water, food, a rain jacket, a warm layer, a torch and a basic first-aid kit. Pay the sanctuary fee at the forest checkpost, and check current status before you travel, because paths can be damaged by landslides after the monsoon. These routes suit fit walkers in October to December or March to May. Avoid them from June to September and in snow.

Questions people ask

Good to know

What are the entry points for Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary

There are three: Hilley, Dentam and Soreng. Hilley is the most popular, as it is reachable by road and Barsey is only about 4 km away on foot. Dentam and Soreng routes are longer forest walks that need a full day and a local guide.

Can I walk from Dentam to Barsey

Yes, Dentam is one of the sanctuary's entry points, but the route is much longer than the Hilley trail and less used. Go with a local guide, start at first light and plan a full day. Check path conditions after the monsoon and check current status before you travel.

Is a guide compulsory for Barsey

For the Hilley trail, a guide is not usually required, as the path is wide and clear. For the Dentam and Soreng routes we strongly suggest one, because paths split and are less used. Forest rules can change, so ask at the checkpost and check current status before you travel.
