Night at Guras Kunj and Kangchenjunga sunrise

Guras Kunj is the trekkers' hut at the top of the Hilley trail and the only lodging inside the sanctuary. It is basic: shared rooms or dormitory beds, simple meals of rice, dal and vegetables, limited water and power, and no heating. What it offers is location. After the day walkers leave in the afternoon, the ridge goes quiet, and you may hear pheasants calling from the forest below.
On clear evenings the sun sets across the Singalila Range towards Nepal. Before dawn, step outside with a torch and a warm jacket and face north. Kangchenjunga, at 8,586 m the world's third-highest mountain, catches the first light, with Kabru and Pandim beside it. October to December gives the best chance of a clear sunrise. In spring, the trade-off is flowers with more haze.
Book the hut through your Okhrey homestay or an operator and confirm it is open, because opening depends on season and management. Rates change, so ask when you book. Bring a sleeping bag liner or warm layers, a head torch, water purification, snacks and cash. Nights are cold all year and can fall below freezing from December to March. Walk out the next morning after breakfast.
