Snow play on the Yumthang road

Snow usually covers Yumthang from December into March, and on many winter days the road is cleared only to a point below the valley. Your driver will go as far as it is safe and stop where other cars have stopped. That might be the meadow itself or several kilometres short; nobody can promise in advance.
Wherever you stop, the snow is usually deep and clean. Children can build snowmen and slide on slopes away from the road, and adults can walk a little into the fir forest. Stay together, keep off the road edge where snow hides drops, and do not walk onto frozen streams.
Dress properly: thermals, waterproof trousers, gum-boots or snow boots, a padded jacket, gloves and a cap, plus sunglasses. Hire what you lack in Lachung for ₹150–300 an item, indicative, 2026. Wet gloves are the most common problem, so carry spares. After an hour, get back into the car to warm up.

Questions people ask
Good to know
Is Yumthang open in winter
Usually partly. From December to March the road is often snowbound, and cars go as far as it has been cleared. On some days that is the valley itself, on others well short of it. After a heavy snowfall the trip may be cancelled for a day or two. Check current status before you travel.
Is Yumthang better in snow or in spring
It depends on what you want. December to March gives snow play and a white valley, but colder mornings and road uncertainty. Late April to May gives rhododendrons, greener meadows and more reliable access, but bigger crowds and higher hotel rates. October–November gives clear skies and golden grass.
What should kids wear for snow at Yumthang
Thermal inners, a fleece, a waterproof padded jacket, waterproof trousers, two pairs of woollen socks, gum-boots or snow boots, waterproof gloves, a woollen cap and sunglasses. Carry a full spare set of socks and gloves. Boots and jackets can be hired in Lachung.
