Riverside walk on the Yumthang meadow

Most visitors stay within 100 m of the parking area. Walk 15 minutes up or down the valley along the river and you will be almost alone. The ground is flat but soft and stony in places, so wear shoes with grip, and stay on obvious paths to protect the meadow.
In late spring the grass is full of primulas, small irises and other alpine flowers; in summer the grazing herds arrive; in October and November the grass turns gold and the sky is usually its clearest. Look at the slopes for the dark firs and the paler bands of rhododendron.
At 3,564 m even a flat walk is tiring. Go slowly, talk as you walk and stop if you are short of breath. Do not cross the river on rocks; it is fast and very cold. Keep an eye on the time, since your driver will want to leave by the hour agreed.

Questions people ask
Good to know
How much time do we get at Yumthang
On most packages, about 1–1.5 hours at Yumthang, or 30–45 minutes if you are adding Zero Point. Drivers need to bring you back to Lachung by late morning so you can check out and cross the Toong checkpost by 4 pm. Agree the time with your driver before you walk off.
Is Yumthang crowded
In May and Puja week in October it can be busy near the parking area and stalls, with dozens of cars arriving at the same time. Walk 15 minutes along the river and it thins out quickly. December to February and November are quieter. Arriving early also helps.
Are there toilets at Yumthang
There are basic toilets near the stalls and parking area, sometimes pay-per-use, and they can be poorly maintained in peak season. There are almost none at Zero Point. Use the hotel toilet before leaving Lachung and the Yumthang facilities before going higher.
