Rhododendron morning at Yumthang

Rhododendrons in Sikkim flower from low to high: the lower slopes in March and April, and the belt around Yumthang from about the third week of April into late May. Because different species flower at different heights and times, there is usually colour somewhere along the road for five or six weeks. Late April to mid-May is the safest window.
Ask your driver for short stops on the way up between the sanctuary gate and the valley, when the light is soft and the road is quiet. At Yumthang itself, walk to the forest edge on either side of the meadow, where the trees grow among firs, rather than staying by the stalls. Primulas and other small flowers come up on the meadow itself.
The sanctuary is protected. Do not pick flowers or break branches for photos, and keep drones in your bag; flying them in this border area is not allowed without permission. Cloud usually rolls in by 10–11 am, so the first two hours of the day are the ones that count.

Good to know
When do rhododendrons bloom in Yumthang
The main bloom around Yumthang runs from about the third week of April to late May, with lower slopes flowering earlier and higher ones later. Peak timing shifts a week or two with the weather each year. For the best chance, plan for the first half of May and book Lachung hotels early.
Are there rhododendrons in Yumthang in March
Only a few, mostly on the lower slopes below the valley towards the end of the month. In March Yumthang is usually still under snow or just thawing. If you want snow and early flowers together, late March is a good compromise, but for a full bloom go between late April and May.
Can I fly a drone at Yumthang
No, not without official permission. Yumthang is in a protected and border-sensitive area, and drone flights are restricted. Police and army personnel can confiscate drones. Keep it packed and use a long lens instead. Check current status before you travel if you hold a permit for filming.
