The lower Neora forest from Samsing and Mouchuki

Most visitors see only the upper Neora forest from Lava, but the park also reaches down toward the Dooars. From Samsing, a tea-garden village in the foothills north of Chalsa and Malbazar, a road climbs toward the park's southern edge. WBFDC runs eco tourism centres at Samsing and Suntalekhola and a small camp at Mouchuki, on the edge of the national park.
This side is lower, warmer and wetter: subtropical forest with tall broadleaf trees, climbers, ferns and streams, and a different set of birds, including species of the foothills. Walks start from the camp area with forest guides. The landscape changes quickly with height, and on clear days you can look south over the Dooars plains.
Permits for this side are handled through the forest offices that cover Samsing; ask your lodge or operator, and check current rules, as access can change. The park's monsoon closure applies here too. Combine a night at Mouchuki or Samsing with Lataguri for Gorumara, or with Lava via Gorubathan for a full north–south cross-section.

Questions people ask
Good to know
How do I reach Samsing and Mouchuki
Samsing is in the Dooars foothills, about 3 hours by road from Siliguri via Sevoke, Chalsa or Malbazar. Shared jeeps run from Siliguri and Malbazar to Samsing; beyond that, use a reserved car. Mouchuki camp lies a short distance further toward the national park. Roads can be rough after rain, so check current status before you travel.
Can I go from Mouchuki to Lava through the park
Not as a casual walk. Treks that cross the park between the southern and northern sides are long, pass through core forest and need special permission, guides and support, if allowed at all. For most visitors, the practical way to connect the two sides is by road via Gorubathan, about 3–4 hours.
Is the Samsing side of Neora Valley worth it
Yes, if you want to see more than one face of the park or are already in the Dooars. The lower forest is lush and different from the cold upper forest above Lava, with foothill birds and streams. It is easier to combine with Gorumara and Lataguri. For red panda habitat, though, the higher forest from Lava is the place.
