A full birding day in Neora Valley

Neora Valley's great advantage for birders is its altitude range. In a single day based at Lava you can work forest at around 2,000 m near Kolakham, temperate forest above 2,500 m on the way to Zero Point, and open ridge country at Rishyap. Each holds different birds, and mixed flocks move between them through the day.
Species regularly reported by birders here include many laughingthrushes, fulvettas, yuhinas, sibias, minivets, nuthatches, woodpeckers and warblers, with chances of parrotbills in bamboo and pheasants such as the satyr tragopan and kalij in quiet places. Records vary by season; winter brings altitudinal migrants and spring brings song and display.
Hire a specialist guide who knows calls and current sites; it makes the difference between a good day and a frustrating one. Start at first light on the roads outside the park, collect the permit in Lava by mid-morning, then go in toward Zero Point. Carry binoculars, a field guide, layers and lunch, and respect closed zones.
