Walk with a Kolakham guide along village paths and permitted trails at the edge of Neora Valley National Park, through oak, maple, bamboo and fern, looking for birds, barking deer and the signs of animals that stay out of sight.

Neora Valley National Park, set up in 1986, protects about 88 sq km of forest that rises from the foothills to about 3,200 m. Kolakham sits right at its edge, so a morning walk takes you quickly from fields into tall, mossy forest. Your guide will choose paths that stay outside the core zone or within permitted routes, depending on the permit you hold.

Expect birds above all: laughingthrushes, sibias, barbets, flycatchers, woodpeckers and, with luck, hornbills or pheasants in quiet spots. Barking deer bark from the undergrowth, and guides point out scratches, scat and diggings left by animals. The red panda lives in the higher forest; sightings near Kolakham are very rare.

Walks inside the national park need a permit from the forest range office in Lava, issued on the day; your homestay or guide will explain what is allowed. The park is closed from mid-June to mid-September. Wear muted colours, keep voices low, carry water and a rain layer, and never leave food or litter.

Questions people ask

Good to know

Do I need a permit to walk in the forest at Kolakham

Village paths and the road need no permit. Entering Neora Valley National Park proper, including its trails, requires a day permit from the forest range office in Lava, plus guide and vehicle charges where applicable. Rules on which trails are open change, so ask your guide and check current status before you travel.

Can I see a red panda near Kolakham

It is very unlikely. Red pandas live in the higher forests of Neora Valley, usually above 2,500 m, are mostly active at dawn and dusk and spend much of their time in trees. Sightings near Kolakham are extremely rare. Walk for the forest and birds, and treat any panda as a rare stroke of luck.

Are there leeches in Kolakham forests

Yes, in the wet months. Leeches are common from about April to October, worst during and just after the monsoon. Wear long trousers tucked into socks or leech socks, check your legs every so often, and carry salt or a little tobacco to remove them. They are harmless, though bites bleed for a while.
