Walk the terraces around Kolakham with your homestay host to see black cardamom growing under shade trees, ginger beds and vegetable plots, and learn how a forest-edge family farms, sells and lives through the year.

Black cardamom, called alaichi locally, is one of the hill crops of Kalimpong and Sikkim. It grows as a tall herb under shade trees on moist slopes, and the red-brown pods are harvested in autumn and dried over smoky fires, which gives them their flavour. Around Kolakham, families grow it on wetter slopes, with ginger, maize and vegetables on the sunnier terraces.

A walk with your host takes in the cardamom groves, a drying shed if one is in use, cattle sheds and kitchen gardens. Ask about the crop disease and price swings that have hit cardamom in recent decades, and why many families now combine farming with homestays.

Stay on paths and ask before picking anything. If you want to buy cardamom or ginger, buy from your host or neighbours, at fair village prices. A tip of ₹200–500 for a guided walk is appreciated, indicative for 2026. Autumn is the most interesting season, when harvest and drying are under way.

Questions people ask

Good to know

When is black cardamom harvested around Kolakham

Black cardamom in the Kalimpong and Sikkim hills is generally harvested in autumn, roughly September to November depending on altitude, and then dried over wood fires. October visits often coincide with harvesting and drying. Ask your homestay in advance if you want to see the process, as timing varies year to year.

Can I buy cardamom in Kolakham

Often, yes. Families who grow it may sell dried black cardamom directly, especially after the autumn harvest, along with ginger and other produce. Prices are usually fair and close to local market rates. Ask your host; buying directly keeps more money in the village than buying from shops in town.

Is a farm walk in Kolakham suitable for children

Yes. Children usually enjoy the animals, the gardens and the cardamom plants, and the walk is short and gentle. Paths can be steep and slippery in places, so wear good shoes and hold small children's hands near terrace edges. Bring insect repellent in spring and autumn.
