Kanchenjunga dawn from Kolakham

Kolakham faces north over deep, forested valleys, and on clear mornings the snow peaks of Sikkim, with Kanchenjunga the highest, stand above the ridges. The view is not as wide as from Rishyap, but it is right outside most homestays, which makes it easy for families and seniors.
Ask your host the evening before where to stand; some terraces see more of the range than others, and a few minutes' walk along the road can open the view. Be outside about 20 minutes before sunrise, as the first light on the summit comes before the sun reaches the village. The colour moves from pink to gold within a quarter of an hour.
October to December gives the clearest mornings, and January to April has many good days with some haze. Clouds often build by mid-morning, so do not wait. Bring a jacket, hat and a hot drink, as dawn is cold even in spring.

Questions people ask
Good to know
Can you see Kanchenjunga from Kolakham
Yes, on clear days, especially at sunrise from October to April. The snows of Kanchenjunga and the Sikkim ranges rise above the forested ridges north of the village. Many homestays have mountain-facing terraces. From May to September, clouds usually hide the range. A clear evening is usually a good sign for the next morning.
Is the view better from Kolakham or Rishyap
Rishyap's high, open ridge gives a wider and more dramatic panorama, while Kolakham's view is narrower but right outside your room, with forest in the foreground. Rishyap is colder and higher; Kolakham is closer to Changey Falls and the Neora forest. With two nights, you can see both.
What time is sunrise at Kolakham
Sunrise ranges from about 5 am in May and June to about 6:15 am in December and January. The first light reaches the high peaks some minutes before the sun rises over the village, so be outside 20 minutes early. Your homestay host can tell you the exact time for your dates.
