The full run of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway starts at NJP in the plains and climbs 88 km to Darjeeling through loops and zig-zags. It is slow, about seven hours, and best treated as a day out rather than the fastest way up.

The UNESCO-listed Darjeeling Himalayan Railway runs from New Jalpaiguri at about 100 m to Darjeeling at roughly 2,200 m. The scheduled through train leaves NJP in the morning, crosses Siliguri, and starts climbing after Sukna, where the forest of the Mahananda sanctuary closes in. Above Rangtong come the loops and zig-zag reversals that let the train gain height on a mountainside too steep for an ordinary railway.

Most of the line runs alongside or across Hill Cart Road, so you see the shops, school children and tea stalls of Tindharia, Mahanadi and Kurseong at walking pace. Kurseong is a natural break. Above it the train passes Sonada and Ghum, the highest station on the line at about 2,258 m, before dropping round the Batasia Loop into Darjeeling. Timings change with the season and with landslide repairs, and diesel engines haul most through trains.

Book through IRCTC as soon as your dates are fixed; seats on this train are limited and sell out in October and May. If seven hours is too long, take a jeep up and ride the short joy train from Darjeeling to Ghum instead, or take the steam service from Darjeeling towards Kurseong where it runs. Check current timetables before you travel.

Questions people ask

Good to know

How long does the toy train take from NJP to Darjeeling

About seven to eight hours for the 88 km run, if there are no delays. Jeeps cover the same climb in about three to three and a half hours. That is why most travellers go up by road and ride a shorter section, such as the Darjeeling–Ghum joy ride, by train. Timings change with the season and repairs, so check current status before you travel.

How do I book the NJP Darjeeling toy train

Seats are sold on IRCTC like any other Indian Railways train, usually up to 60 days ahead under current rules. Search for trains from NJP to DJ. Through trains have a small number of first class and AC chair coaches, and they sell out in Puja, winter and summer holidays. Book as soon as your dates are firm and check current status before you travel.

Is the toy train worth it for children

For a whole day, only if they love trains. Most children enjoy two or three hours and then get restless. A good compromise is to ride from NJP or Siliguri to Kurseong, about half the line, and continue by jeep, or take the two-hour joy ride from Darjeeling around the Batasia Loop to Ghum and back.
