The Singalila trek from Manebhanjan

Day one climbs from Manebhanjan, at about 2,134 m, through Chitrey and Meghma to Tumling, about 2,970 m. It is a short, steep day of 4–5 hours, and it gets your legs and lungs used to the height. Tumling lies just inside Nepal and has the best lodges on the route, with views of Kangchenjunga at dawn. Day two drops into the forest of Singalila National Park, past Gairibas, to Kalipokhri, a small dark lake at about 3,186 m.
Day three is the last climb, past Bikheybhanjang and up a steep zigzag to Sandakphu at 3,636 m. Arrive by early afternoon, rest, and be up early for sunrise. From here you can return the same way, descend through Gurdum and Srikhola to Rimbick, where shared jeeps run back to Darjeeling, or carry on to Phalut. The Srikhola route drops through villages and forest and makes the walk feel complete.
A licensed guide is compulsory and is hired at Manebhanjan. He handles lodge bookings and the route along the border. Porters are available for a separate daily fee. Expect lodges with dormitories or small rooms, shared toilets and limited hot water. Altitude affects some people above 3,000 m, so walk slowly, drink plenty of water and turn back if headaches get worse. Check current park rules and fees before you travel.

Questions people ask
Good to know
Is the Sandakphu trek difficult
It is a moderate trek. There is no climbing or exposure, but you walk 4–7 hours a day and gain about 1,500 m over three days, with some steep sections near Tumling and below Sandakphu. Reasonably fit first-timers manage it well. Training with brisk walks or stairs for a few weeks before you go makes it much easier.
How many days do I need for the Sandakphu trek
Plan five to seven days from Darjeeling. Three days take you up to Sandakphu; the descent via Srikhola to Rimbick takes another one or two. Adding Phalut makes it six or seven days. Keep one spare day in case weather or a sore knee slows you down, and add a night in Darjeeling before you start.
Can I trek to Sandakphu without a guide
No. Singalila National Park requires every trekking group to hire a licensed guide at Manebhanjan. Guides cost about ₹1,000–1,500 a day per group, indicative 2026, and also arrange lodges. The rule is enforced at the entry gate. If you are a solo trekker, ask at Manebhanjan whether you can share a guide with another small group.
