Land Rover ride up the Singalila Ridge

The Land Rover stand is in Manebhanjan bazaar, a short walk from where the Darjeeling jeeps stop. Vehicles go up in turn through the drivers' association, so you do not pick your car, but you agree the plan at the counter: a same-day return, an overnight at Sandakphu, or a longer trip on to Phalut. Pay the park entry fee and hire your guide first, as both are needed before the vehicle can pass the gate.
The track climbs straight away, in tight hairpins of concrete and broken stone, through Chitrey and Meghma to Tumling, then along the ridge past Gairibas and Kalipokhri. Many of the vehicles are decades old, with simple bench seats, and the ride is bumpy and loud. Drivers stop for tea and photos. In dry weather it takes 3–5 hours to Sandakphu; after rain or snow it can take much longer or stop altogether.
A same-day return gives you only an hour or two on top, usually in afternoon cloud, so we suggest staying a night and catching the sunrise. A vehicle carries up to about six people, so split the fare: at ₹5,500–7,500 return, indicative 2026, it works out to roughly ₹1,000–1,300 each in a full car. The quick climb from 2,134 m to 3,636 m can cause headaches, so rest and drink water on arrival.

Questions people ask
Good to know
Can I go to Sandakphu by car
Not in your own car or a normal taxi. Private vehicles stop at Manebhanjan, and the steep track to Sandakphu is run by the local Land Rover drivers' association. A return trip costs about ₹5,500–7,500 per vehicle, indicative 2026, for up to about six people. You also need a licensed guide and park entry tickets.
Is a day trip to Sandakphu by Land Rover worth it
It is possible but rarely worth it. The round trip takes 7–9 hours of driving, and you reach the top around midday, when cloud usually hides the peaks. Staying one night at Sandakphu gives you a sunrise view, more time to adjust to the altitude and a much better chance of seeing Everest and Kangchenjunga.
Is Sandakphu suitable for senior citizens
By Land Rover, yes, for seniors in reasonable health. The ride is bumpy and the altitude of 3,636 m can cause breathlessness, so anyone with heart or lung problems should ask a doctor first. Spend a night in Darjeeling before going up, keep the first evening at Sandakphu quiet and carry any regular medicines.
