Sunrise over Everest and Kangchenjunga

Set an alarm for about 4.30 am in October and November, a little later in December. Walk the few minutes from your lodge to the open top of the ridge, where everyone gathers. The first light hits Kangchenjunga, at 8,586 m, turning the snow pink and then gold. The long line of peaks around it, seen side on from here, is the shape locals call the Sleeping Buddha.
Then turn west. On a clear day the Everest group shows as a cluster of distant peaks, with Lhotse beside Everest and Makalu's sharp summit to the right. They are more than 100 km away, so they look small, but there are few places where all four can be seen together. Your guide will point out which is which; it is easy to mix them up without help.
Cloud is the risk. Autumn mornings are the most reliable, especially from mid-October to late November. In March and April, haze and afternoon cloud are common, though early mornings can still be clear. Wear everything you have: before sunrise the wind on the ridge can push the temperature well below freezing. A flask of tea from the lodge kitchen helps, and most lodges will make one if you ask the night before.

Can you see Everest from Sandakphu
Yes, on clear days. Everest is visible to the west from the top of Sandakphu, along with Lhotse and Makalu, while Kangchenjunga dominates the north-east. The peaks are more than 100 km away, so they look small, and cloud often hides them. Your best chance is a dawn between mid-October and late November.
What time is sunrise at Sandakphu
In October sunrise is around 5.30 am and in December closer to 6.15 am. Be at the top 20–30 minutes earlier, because the snow peaks catch light before the sun appears. Times shift a little each week, so ask your lodge the evening before and set an alarm. Carry a torch for the short walk.
Which month has the clearest view from Sandakphu
Mid-October to late November gives the clearest skies, after the monsoon washes out the haze. December can be very clear but bitterly cold, with snow possible. March and April bring rhododendrons but more haze and afternoon cloud. From mid-June to mid-September the park is usually closed. Check current status before you travel.
