Walk the ridge above Chele La

From the flags at the pass, paths lead up the ridge on either side. The most common walk heads up the open slope, above the tree line, through dwarf rhododendron and juniper, with the Haa valley on one side and the Paro valley on the other. You gain height quickly, and after 30–45 minutes of slow walking the view opens up well beyond what you see from the road.
This is a walk where you decide how far to go. Some groups climb for an hour and come back; fitter walkers spend two to three hours exploring the ridge with their guide. There is no fixed destination, and the path can be faint in places, so stay with your guide. The air is thin at about 4,000 m: walk slower than feels necessary, drink water, and turn back if you get a headache, feel dizzy or breathless.
Do this walk at the end of your trip, after a few nights at Paro or Thimphu altitude, not the day after you arrive. Mornings are clearer and less windy. Wear boots or trail shoes, layers, a hat and sunscreen; the sun is strong even when it is cold. In snow, skip it or stay close to the pass.

Questions people ask
Good to know
Is there a hike at Chele La
Yes. Paths climb the open ridge from the pass on both sides, among prayer flags and dwarf rhododendron. You can walk for 30 minutes or for two to three hours with your guide, turning back when you like. The views over the Paro and Haa valleys widen as you climb. Go in the morning and walk slowly at this height.
Is altitude sickness a risk at Chele La
It can be. The pass is at about 3,988 m and the ridge goes higher. Most people are fine for a short visit, but a ridge walk on your first day in Bhutan raises the risk. Spend a few nights in Paro or Thimphu first, walk slowly, drink water, and head down if you get a headache, nausea or dizziness.
Can children and seniors visit Chele La
Yes, for a short visit by car, if they are well and have spent a couple of nights in Paro first. Keep them warm, limit time at the top to an hour or so, and skip the ridge walk if anyone feels breathless. People with heart or lung conditions should ask their doctor before going to about 4,000 m.
