Hike down to Kila Goemba nunnery

Kila Goemba sits below Chele La on the Paro side, a cluster of small white buildings tucked against a cliff face high above the valley. It is one of the oldest nunneries in Bhutan and home to a community of nuns who spend their lives in prayer, study and meditation. The setting is the reason most visitors come: buildings wedged into rock, prayer flags, and a long view over forest.
The usual route starts from the pass or from a point a little below it on the road, and follows a path downhill through forest to the nunnery in about 1–1.5 hours. Your driver then meets you at the road below, so you do not have to climb back up. The path is steady and sometimes muddy, with roots and stones, but not technical. Good shoes and a walking pole help on the descent.
Remember that this is a home and a place of retreat, not a tourist site. Keep voices low, ask your guide before photographing nuns or entering any building, and leave a small offering if you visit the shrine. Visiting rules can change, and some areas are closed to outsiders. Combine the hike with the morning view at the pass for a full half-day.

Questions people ask
Good to know
How hard is the Kila Goemba hike
It is a moderate walk, mostly downhill, of about 1–1.5 hours from the Chele La road to the nunnery, on a forest path with roots and loose stones. The altitude, near 3,500–4,000 m, makes it more tiring than it looks. Your driver meets you below, so there is little climbing. Wear good shoes and carry water.
Can tourists visit Kila nunnery
Yes, with a licensed guide, though it is a working nunnery and a place of retreat. Some buildings may be closed to visitors, and you should ask before photographing the nuns. Keep voices low and dress modestly. Your guide checks on the day whether a visit to the shrine is possible. Check current status before you travel.
Can I combine Kila Goemba with Chele La
Yes, this is the usual plan. Drive up early from Paro for the morning view at the pass, then walk down through forest to Kila Goemba, and meet your car on the road below. It makes a half-day of about 4–5 hours from Paro. Do it after you have spent a few days at Paro or Thimphu altitude.
