What a 5-night Darjeeling–Gangtok trip really costs in 2026

By Darjeeling Tour Plan Desk · 20 August 2026

A 5-night Darjeeling–Gangtok trip from Bagdogra or NJP costs about ₹13,000–17,000 per person on a budget, ₹22,000–30,000 in comfort and ₹50,000–80,000 at premium hotels, twin sharing, indicative 2026. Vehicles are the biggest variable, then hotel class and season, not food or entry fees.

Key takeaways

  1. Budget: about ₹13,000–17,000 per person; comfort: ₹22,000–30,000; premium: ₹50,000–80,000, twin sharing, from Bagdogra or NJP, indicative 2026.
  2. Vehicles take 30–45 percent of a budget trip; shared jeeps on transfer days cut that by more than half.
  3. Peak weeks in May, June and October can add 25–40 percent to hotel rates; November after Diwali and March are better value.
  4. Train or flight to Siliguri is not in these numbers, so add it separately.

The three numbers to start with

When a family writes to us asking what Darjeeling and Gangtok will cost, they usually have a figure from a social media post that is either far too low or padded with extras they do not need. So here are the numbers we actually quote, for 5 nights, 2 in Darjeeling and 3 in Gangtok, per person on twin sharing, starting and ending at Bagdogra airport or NJP station.

Budget comes to about ₹13,000–17,000. That means clean two- or three-star hotels or homestays with attached bathrooms, breakfast and dinner, and a mix of reserved and shared vehicles. Comfort is about ₹22,000–30,000: better-located hotels with views and heating, a private car throughout, and the Tsomgo day included. Premium is about ₹50,000–80,000: heritage or five-star stays such as the Windamere or Mayfair in Darjeeling and the Elgin Nor-Khill or Taj Guras Kutir in Gangtok.

None of these include your train or flight to Siliguri, lunches, shopping, or a North Sikkim extension. All figures are indicative for 2026.

Line by line: a budget couple

This is what two people sharing a room spend on a budget version of the trip, per person, in October or March. Each line is a range, because the same room costs more in Puja week than in late November.

ItemPer person, budgetPer person, comfort
5 nights hotel, twin sharing₹4,500–7,000₹10,000–15,000
Breakfast and dinner, 5 days₹2,500–3,500₹4,000–6,000

Darjeeling to Gangtok₹400–600 shared jeep₹2,000–2,750 share of a car
Tsomgo and Baba Mandir with permit₹800–1,300 shared seat₹2,250–3,250 share of a car
Gangtok local sightseeing₹600–1,200₹1,250–1,750
Gangtok to Bagdogra/NJP₹400–600 shared jeep₹2,000–2,750 share of a car
Entry fees, toy train joy ride, tips₹1,000–2,000₹2,000–3,500

Where the money really goes

Look at the table again and you see the pattern. Hotels are the largest single line, but vehicles together are almost as large, and they are the line you have the most control over. A couple who takes a reserved car on all four transfer days pays roughly ₹8,000–9,000 each for transport. The same couple using shared jeeps from NJP and between the towns pays closer to ₹3,000–4,000, and still has a private car for Tiger Hill and Tsomgo, where it matters.

Food costs less than most people expect. A plate of momos in Gangtok or Darjeeling is ₹80–150, a full veg thali ₹150–250, and a good Tibetan or Nepali dinner for two rarely crosses ₹800 outside hotel restaurants. Entry fees are small too: the zoo, the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, monasteries and viewpoints are mostly ₹20–150 each, indicative 2026.

The quiet budget-breakers are the add-ons sold at the hotel desk: a separate car for every half-day, a Nathu La upgrade on a day the pass is shut, a pony ride at Tsomgo, or a costly toy train ticket bought from a tout instead of through IRCTC.

How season moves the number

The same 5-night plan can vary by ₹5,000 per person depending on the week you travel. The busiest stretches are mid-April to mid-June, when the plains heat drives families uphill, and the Durga Puja to Diwali weeks in October. Rooms that cost ₹2,500 in March are ₹3,500–4,000 then, and reserved cars cost 10–20 percent more.

The best value comes in three windows. Late November to mid-December has clear skies, thin crowds and fair rates. Late February and March bring rhododendrons and early tea, with rooms still at off-season prices. The monsoon, from July to mid-September, is the cheapest of all, with hotel discounts of 30–50 percent, but views are often hidden, the toy train may be suspended and the Tsomgo road can close. Check current status before you travel.

  • Peak (mid-Apr to mid-Jun, Puja to Diwali): add 25–40 percent to hotel rates
  • Shoulder (Mar, late Nov to Dec): close to the numbers above
  • Monsoon (Jul to mid-Sep): 30–50 percent off rooms, more risk of closures

Five ways to spend less without a worse trip

We plan most of our budget trips around a few simple habits. None of them make the trip less comfortable in a way you will notice afterwards.

  • Take shared jeeps on transfer days. From NJP to Darjeeling and from Darjeeling to Gangtok, a shared seat is ₹250–600 against ₹3,500–5,500 for a whole car.
  • Book the toy train joy ride directly on IRCTC weeks ahead; the seats sell out and resale is costly.
  • Stay a street or two off the Mall in Darjeeling and off MG Marg in Gangtok, but not so far down that every evening ends with a taxi.
  • Eat at least one meal a day outside the hotel. Local momo shops and thali places are cheaper and often better.
  • Travel in the second half of November or in March, when rates are close to off-season and skies are mostly clear.

Three sample budgets for real travellers

Numbers in a table can feel abstract, so here is how they work out for three kinds of travellers we often plan for. All are per person for 5 nights, indicative 2026, without travel to Siliguri.

A college student travelling with a friend in March, sharing a simple room, taking shared jeeps on every transfer, a shared seat for Tsomgo and eating at momo shops, can do the trip for about ₹11,000–13,000 each. The trade-off is basic rooms below the Mall in Darjeeling and early starts at jeep stands.

A couple from Kolkata in late November, staying in a mid-range hotel with a view in both towns, taking a reserved car for Tiger Hill, Tsomgo and the Darjeeling–Gangtok transfer and shared jeeps from and to NJP, usually spends about ₹18,000–22,000 each. This is the plan we suggest most often.

A family of four from Bengaluru in Puja week, with two rooms, a private Innova throughout, comfortable hotels near the Mall and MG Marg, and the toy train joy ride, spends about ₹27,000–32,000 per adult, less for children sharing their parents' room. Booking three months ahead keeps it at the lower end.

What a package should include

If you buy a package instead of planning it yourself, compare like with like. A fair budget package at ₹13,000–17,000 per person should include all 5 nights of hotel with breakfast and dinner, the airport or station pick-up and drop, the Darjeeling–Gangtok transfer, Tiger Hill and a half-day of local sightseeing in Darjeeling, the Tsomgo and Baba Mandir day with permit, and a half-day of sightseeing in Gangtok.

It usually does not include the Nathu La permit and vehicle upgrade, the toy train, entry fees, lunches or tips. If a quote is far below ₹13,000 for 5 nights, ask which of the above are missing, or whether the hotels are far out of town. Our own 5-night Darjeeling and Gangtok package starts at ₹16,000 per person on a budget and ₹27,000 in comfort, indicative 2026.

Adding a sixth night or North Sikkim

A sixth night adds about ₹2,000–3,500 per person on a budget and ₹4,000–6,000 in comfort, and it is the single best upgrade for families. It gives you a buffer day for weather and lets you see Tiger Hill or Tsomgo again if cloud spoiled the first try.

Adding Lachung and Yumthang turns the trip into 7 or 8 nights and adds roughly ₹5,000–8,000 per person on a group package, more with a reserved car. It needs its own permit and is closed or risky after heavy rain. Check current status before you travel.

Questions people ask

Good to know

How much does a 5-night Darjeeling and Gangtok trip cost

About ₹13,000–17,000 per person on a budget, ₹22,000–30,000 in comfort and ₹50,000–80,000 at premium hotels, twin sharing, from Bagdogra or NJP, indicative 2026. These cover hotels with breakfast and dinner, vehicles, Tiger Hill and the Tsomgo day. Train or flight to Siliguri, lunches and shopping are extra.

Is ₹30,000 enough for a couple for Darjeeling and Gangtok

Yes, ₹30,000 for two people is enough for a careful 5-night budget trip in shoulder season, using shared jeeps on transfer days and simple hotels with breakfast. It is tight in May, June or Puja week, when hotel rates rise by a quarter or more. It does not cover travel to Siliguri, so budget that separately.

What is the cheapest month for Darjeeling and Gangtok

July and August are the cheapest, with hotel discounts of 30–50 percent, but cloud often hides the mountains and landslides can close roads and the toy train. For value with good weather, choose late November to mid-December, or March, when rates are near off-season levels and skies are mostly clear.

How much is a car from Darjeeling to Gangtok

A small reserved car costs about ₹4,000–5,500 and an Innova about ₹5,500–7,000, indicative 2026. A shared jeep seat costs ₹400–600 and leaves from the Darjeeling motor stand in the morning. For four people the reserved car is close in cost per head and lets you stop on the way.

Do Darjeeling–Gangtok packages include Nathu La

Most budget packages include Tsomgo Lake and Baba Mandir but not Nathu La. Nathu La needs an extra permit and usually a vehicle upgrade, adding roughly ₹1,500–2,500 per person, indicative 2026, and it is open to visitors only on certain days. Check current status before you travel.
