The former summer residence of the Maharaja of Dinajpur on Rinkingpong Road, long known as the Kalimpong Park Hotel and now run by Sterling Holidays. A colonial house with verandahs and gardens on a viewpoint just above the town centre.

Before Partition, the zamindar rulers of Dinajpur in Bengal kept a summer house in Kalimpong, as many plains families did. The house, on a viewpoint about 1 km uphill from the market, later became the Kalimpong Park Hotel and is now operated by Sterling Holidays as Sterling Park Kalimpong. It keeps colonial-era woodwork, verandahs and gardens, with views across the hills and, on clear days, Kanchenjunga.

We place it at the upper end of the market: more character than a modern hotel and less expensive than Mayfair. It suits couples and families who want a quiet hill-house setting close to town. Sterling sells rooms both to its holiday members and to the public, so availability can vary in peak weeks. Rates change with season and meal plan; check current rates when you book.

Why we like it

  • Former summer house of the Maharaja of Dinajpur
  • Viewpoint location just above town
  • Colonial verandahs and gardens

Watch out for

Peak dates can be taken by holiday-club members, and the road up from town is steep for walkers.

Questions people ask

Good to know

Is Sterling Park Kalimpong the old Kalimpong Park Hotel

Yes. The property was long known as the Kalimpong Park Hotel and, before that, as the summer residence of the Maharaja of Dinajpur. Sterling Holidays now runs it under the Sterling Park name. If you find older reviews under the Kalimpong Park Hotel name, they refer to the same house, though rooms and service may have changed since.

How far is Sterling Park from Kalimpong market

It is about 1 km uphill from the main market, on Rinkingpong Road. That is a 10-minute taxi ride or a steep 20–25 minute walk. The location keeps it quieter than the town centre while leaving Haat Bazaar, the monasteries and cafés within easy reach by taxi.

Is Sterling Park Kalimpong good for seniors

Generally yes, with a check on the room. The house has gardens and verandahs for slow mornings, and the hotel arranges cars, which avoids steep town walks. Heritage buildings can have steps between levels, so ask for a room with the fewest stairs and confirm hot water and heating arrangements before winter stays.
