Norbu Ghang Resort
comfort
Norbu Ghang was among the first resorts in Pelling built with Sikkimese design in mind rather than as a concrete block. The cottages sit on terraces planted with rhododendron and orchids, each with a small verandah, and the suites are oriented towards Kangchenjunga. On a clear October morning that verandah is where you will want your first cup of tea. It has kept a calmer, older feel than the newer hotels in the centre of town.
The spa offers the hot stone bath, in which river stones heated in a fire are dropped into a wooden tub, a soak locals take for aches after long walks. The resort is a short drive from Pemayangtse and Rabdentse. It is a step up from the town hotels in space and calm, though some fittings show their age. Ask for a recently refurbished room, and book directly in the off-season to ask about meal-inclusive rates.
Why we like it
- Cottages with private verandahs facing the range
- Traditional hot stone bath at the spa
- Quiet edge-of-town setting, a short drive from Pemayangtse
Watch out for
As with many Pelling properties, the finish does not always match the price, so ask for a renovated cottage or a suite with a direct view.
Questions people ask
Good to know
What is the hot stone bath at Norbu Ghang
It is a traditional Sikkimese soak. River stones are heated in a fire and dropped into a wooden tub of water with herbs, warming it slowly and, people say, easing sore muscles. It is especially welcome after the Sanga Choeling climb or a cold dawn at the viewpoint. Book it at the spa a few hours ahead; it is charged separately.
Do all rooms at Norbu Ghang face Kangchenjunga
Not all. The suites and many cottages are set up for the view, but some rooms face the gardens or the valley. If seeing the range from your verandah is the point of the trip, ask for a suite or a named view cottage when booking, and come between October and February when the sky is clearest.
Is Norbu Ghang walking distance from Pelling town
It is on the outskirts, so you can walk to the town centre but most guests use a car for sightseeing. Pemayangtse and the Rabdentse gate are a short drive away. The edge-of-town position is the trade-off: fewer cafés on the doorstep, but quieter nights and wider views than the hotels on the main road.
