A heritage hotel opposite Pemayangtse Monastery, set in about eight acres of forest and gardens below Pelling. The Elgin group says it was built by the Chogyal as a royal retreat. Quiet, old-fashioned comfort with the range across the valley.

The Mount Pandim sits on the ridge facing Pemayangtse, one of Sikkim's oldest monasteries, a short walk across the road. The Elgin group, which also runs historic hotels in Darjeeling and Gangtok, describes the building as a former royal retreat of Sikkim's ruling family. Today it is the most traditional of Pelling's premium stays: wood floors, a tea lounge, a bar and a dining room that serves Sikkimese dishes alongside the usual menu.

Rooms look across to the snows and down to the valleys, and the gardens and surrounding forest are good for birds in the early morning. You are a little away from Pelling's market, which suits people who want the monastery and the mountains more than the cafés. The Sanga Choeling ridge and the Rabdentse ruins are short drives away, and the hotel can arrange cars for the Yuksom and Khecheopalri road. It suits slow travellers who want two or three quiet nights, early walks to the monastery and long breakfasts with the mountains in view. Book well ahead for October and the Christmas holidays.

Why we like it

  • Directly opposite Pemayangtse Monastery: walk to morning prayers
  • Gardens and forest grounds, good for birds and quiet
  • Heritage character that the newer Pelling hotels lack

Watch out for

It sits below the town on the Pemayangtse road, so you need a car for Upper Pelling's cafés, and older heritage rooms can feel cold in winter until the heater runs.

Questions people ask

Good to know

How close is the Elgin Mount Pandim to Pemayangtse Monastery

It is directly opposite, a short walk away. That is the hotel's greatest asset: you can walk over for early prayers, when the monastery is quiet and the light is soft, and be back for breakfast. Rabdentse ruins are also close by road. Check monastery timings with the hotel, as they shift during festivals.

Is the Elgin Mount Pandim worth the price

If you value a quiet heritage setting, gardens and a monastery on your doorstep, yes. If you want a modern spa resort or to be in the middle of Pelling's market, the newer properties in town may suit you better. Off-season months, especially June to September and January, bring noticeably lower rates.

Can you see Kangchenjunga from the Elgin Mount Pandim

Yes, on clear days the range rises across the valley, and October to February gives the best odds. Mornings are clearest; by late morning in spring the haze often closes in. For the classic sunrise colour, set an alarm, wrap up warm and watch from the garden before breakfast.
