A modern resort at Naku Chumbong in Lower Pelling, laid out like a Sikkimese monastery in stone and carved wood, with a spa, several restaurants and balconies facing the range. Pelling's most complete resort for couples and families.

The Chumbi was built in local style rather than as a glass box: stone walls, earth tones and hand-carved woodwork, with buildings arranged in the manner of a monastery around courtyards. Rooms have balconies, and the better ones look straight at the Kangchenjunga range. It is a Club Mahindra associate property, so expect families in school holidays. Grounds spread over several acres of terraced slope.

Most guests use it as a place to slow down between sightseeing runs: Pemayangtse and Rabdentse are a short drive, Khecheopalri and Yuksom make a full day, and the spa is there when you come back cold and tired. Food is the most varied in Pelling, from Sikkimese dishes to the standard multi-cuisine buffet. Ask for a room on the upper levels for the clearest view of the range.

Why we like it

  • Monastery-inspired architecture in stone and carved wood
  • Full spa and several dining options under one roof
  • Balconies facing the range from the view rooms

Watch out for

It is in Lower Pelling, a drive from the Upper Pelling cafés, and it gets busy and noisier with families in May–June and the Puja holidays.

Questions people ask

Good to know

Is The Chumbi Mountain Retreat good for a honeymoon

Yes, it is one of the most popular honeymoon choices in West Sikkim: view rooms with balconies, a spa, several restaurants and enough space to feel private. For a quieter stay, avoid the school-holiday weeks of May–June and the Puja holidays in October, and ask for a room on an upper level facing the range.

Where is The Chumbi Mountain Retreat in Pelling

It is at Naku Chumbong in Lower Pelling, below the main town. Pemayangtse Monastery and the Rabdentse ruins are a short drive away, and Upper Pelling's market and cafés are about 10–15 minutes by car. Most guests keep a car for the day, since walking back uphill at night is not pleasant.

When are rates lowest at The Chumbi

Rates usually drop in the monsoon, June to September, and in January–February outside the New Year week. Views are less reliable in the monsoon, but January and February are cold, clear and quiet. Booking directly and asking about meal-inclusive packages can save money over adding meals at the restaurant.
