The short answer
Kolkata is the Dooars' biggest market, and the question we hear most is simply: how much? The answer depends less on which parks you visit than on three choices. Do you take the train or fly? Do you share a car and safari jeep with others or keep them to yourselves? And do you travel in an ordinary week or a holiday week? Here is a 3-night trip, Lataguri and Jaldapara, per person, twin sharing, including travel from Kolkata and back. All figures are indicative for 2026.
The frugal plan uses sleeper class on the Kanchankanya Express, government or family lodges, buses and autos between bases, and shared safari seats. The comfortable plan uses 3AC, a private car in the Dooars and a mid-range resort. The premium plan flies to Bagdogra and stays in the best resorts with private jeeps.
| Item, per person | Frugal | Comfortable | Premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kolkata to the Dooars and back | ₹900–1,200 sleeper | ₹2,400–3,000 3AC | ₹9,000–16,000 flights |
| 3 nights' room, twin sharing | ₹2,500–4,000 | ₹6,000–10,000 | ₹15,000–25,000 |
| Meals | ₹1,200–1,800 | ₹2,500–3,500 | ₹4,500–6,000 |
| Transport inside the Dooars | ₹700–1,200 | ₹4,000–6,000 | ₹7,000–10,000 |
| Safaris (two) | ₹1,000–1,500 | ₹2,800–4,000 | ₹6,000–8,000 |
| Total, rounded | ₹9,000–12,000 | ₹18,000–25,000 | ₹35,000–60,000 |
Train or flight
For most Kolkata travellers, the train wins. The Kanchankanya Express leaves Sealdah in the evening and runs overnight through New Mal Junction, Chalsa and Hasimara to Alipurduar, so you step off near the parks in the morning without paying for a hotel night or a road transfer from Siliguri. Sleeper fares are about ₹400–550 each way and 3AC about ₹1,100–1,500, indicative 2026. Overnight trains to NJP, such as the Darjeeling Mail and Padatik Express, add a 2–3 hour road or rail leg.
Flying to Bagdogra takes about an hour, and fares range widely, from about ₹4,000 one way if booked early to well over ₹8,000 near holidays. Add a car from Bagdogra to Lataguri at ₹3,000–4,000. Flights save time but rarely money, unless you are only two people booking early. Timetables and fares change, so check current status before you travel.
Book the train as soon as the reservation window opens, which is typically about two months ahead for most Indian Railways trains, especially for Puja, Christmas and the May school holidays, when waiting lists on the Dooars trains run long. If you cannot get a confirmed berth on the Kanchankanya Express, a confirmed berth to NJP plus a local train or bus onward is better than travelling on a waitlisted ticket. Check current status before you travel.
Rooms: the second-biggest line
Rooms vary more than any other cost. At Lataguri, family-run lodges cost ₹1,200–2,500 a night; mid-range resorts such as The Reserve Gorumara cost about ₹4,500–8,000; and Sinclairs Retreat Dooars at Chalsa costs about ₹7,000–13,000. Government lodges such as Murti Banani and Aranya at Madarihat sit in between, from about ₹1,500 to ₹6,000. These are per room per night, indicative 2026, so a couple halves them per head.
Rates jump in Puja week and from 24 December to 1 January, often to double, and rise on every long weekend. Mid-week stays in November, February and March are typically 20–40% cheaper than weekends. If your dates are flexible, move them before you move hotels.
A family of four, worked out
Take two adults and two children aged 8 and 12, on a 3-night trip to Lataguri and Madarihat in February, travelling 3AC on the Kanchankanya Express. Train fares come to about ₹9,000–11,000 return for four. Two nights in a Lataguri mid-range room and one at Aranya, with an extra mattress, cost about ₹14,000–18,000. A car for transfers and one sightseeing day costs ₹9,000–11,000. Two safaris in a jeep for the family cost ₹5,500–7,500. Food comes to ₹6,000–8,000.
That adds up to about ₹44,000–56,000 for the family, or ₹11,000–14,000 per head, indicative 2026. Switch to sleeper class and a family lodge and it falls to about ₹30,000–36,000. Travel in Puja week and it can pass ₹70,000. Children under 5 usually stay free in parents' rooms, and many lodges charge a small fee for an extra mattress rather than a second room.
A couple on a frugal plan, worked out
Now take two friends or a couple on the cheapest sensible version of the same trip in late November. Sleeper class on the Kanchankanya Express costs about ₹1,000 each for the return journey. Two nights in a Lataguri family lodge at ₹1,500 a room and one night in a simple Madarihat hotel at ₹1,800 come to about ₹2,400 each. Autos, a bus to Madarihat and the auto to Hasimara station add about ₹600 each.
Two safaris in shared jeeps, one Gorumara watchtower and one Jaldapara dawn safari, cost about ₹1,000–1,300 each when six people fill the jeep. Meals at roadside hotels and lodges run about ₹1,500 each for the three days, and extras such as camera fees, tea and a dance programme about ₹800. The total is about ₹7,300–7,600 per person, indicative 2026. That is less than the price of one return flight to Bagdogra in a busy week, for a trip that sees the same animals.
Where the bill creeps up
Small costs add up in the Dooars. Camera fees and guide fees are charged at some parks on top of the safari. Evening cultural programmes at lodges cost ₹100–300 a head. Elephant rides, where offered, cost ₹1,000–2,000 per person. Lunches at resorts on safari days, mineral water, and tips for drivers and guides each add a few hundred rupees a day. Build in ₹500–1,000 per person per day for these.
The biggest hidden cost is a missed safari. If you arrive without a booking in peak season, you may end up paying a tout double or not getting in at all. Book safaris online on the official system the day slots open.
Five ways to cut 20 percent
None of these makes the trip worse. Most of them make it calmer.
- Travel Sunday to Wednesday instead of over the weekend.
- Take the overnight train and skip a hotel night.
- Share safari jeeps with other travellers to fill all six seats.
- Stay in government lodges or family-run Lataguri lodges instead of resorts.
- Pick one base per park and avoid paying a car to sit idle.
