Best time to visit the Dooars, month by month

By Darjeeling Tour Plan Desk

Go between October and May, and best from November to March. February to April often gives the best sightings as grass is cut back and animals come to water. Gorumara, Jaldapara and the other parks close from mid-June to mid-September. Puja week and Christmas week are the most crowded and expensive.

The short answer

The Dooars runs on two calendars: the weather and the forest department. The weather is warm almost all year, at 60–150 m above sea level, with dry, clear winters and a long, heavy monsoon. The forest department closes the parks for the monsoon and breeding season, from about 15 June to 15 September. Between those two facts, October to May is the season, and November to March is the most comfortable part of it.

Here is how we rate each month for a safari trip. Temperatures are typical daytime ranges at Lataguri; rates and crowds follow the holidays.

Winter: November to February

Winter is the Dooars at its easiest. Days are dry and mild, nights at Lataguri and Madarihat drop to around 9–12 °C in January, and the roads are clear. Morning fog is common from mid-December to January, especially along the rivers, which can delay early safaris and trains but makes for soft, misty light once it lifts. Bring a fleece and a warm jacket for open jeeps at dawn; it is colder in a moving vehicle than you expect.

This is also the main season for migratory birds on the rivers and at Gajoldoba on the Teesta, where ducks and waders gather in large numbers. Visitor numbers are high at weekends and around Christmas and New Year, when rooms and safari slots go fast. Mid-November to mid-December and mid-January to February, mid-week, are the calm, good-value windows.

Spring: March to May

Many naturalists rate late February to April as the best time for sightings. Parts of the grassland in Jaldapara and Gorumara are burned or cut back in late winter, new grass comes up, and with water sources drying out, animals gather at the salt licks and pools that the watchtowers overlook. The trade-off is heat: March is pleasant, but by April and May afternoons reach 30–32 °C with high humidity.

Pre-monsoon storms arrive in April and May, usually in the late afternoon or evening, with strong wind and short, heavy rain. They can bring down branches on forest roads, so allow some slack in your plans. School holidays in May bring families from Kolkata, and weekends fill up, but mid-week rooms are often cheap. Plan safaris for dawn and late afternoon and rest at midday.

Monsoon: the park closure

From about 15 June to 15 September, Gorumara, Jaldapara, Chapramari, Chilapata, Buxa and Mahananda close to tourists. The forest department uses these months for the breeding season and because forest tracks become impassable. Rivers such as the Murti, Jaldhaka, Diana and Torsa rise fast and can flood roads and riverbeds, and the Totopara road can be cut off for days. Dates can shift with the weather, so check current status before you travel.

The Dooars is not empty in the monsoon. Tea gardens are at their greenest, the plucking season is in full swing, and some lodges stay open at the lowest rates of the year. If you simply want rain, green and quiet, a stay at Samsing or Murti can be lovely. But there are no safaris, and that is why most people come.

If you do travel in the rains, build in a spare day at the end of the trip, keep your train and flight bookings flexible, and ask your lodge each morning about the roads before you set out. Landslides on the hill roads to Samsing, Jhalong and Darjeeling are common in July and August.

October and the festival season

The parks reopen in mid or late September, and October is a good month once the last rains clear. It is also the busiest single week of the year: Durga Puja, when Bengal goes on holiday and trains, rooms and safari slots sell out weeks ahead. The day after Dashami, many Rajbanshi communities of the Dooars celebrate Bhandani Puja, a local form of the goddess. Late October, after the holidays, is calm and green.

Other dates worth knowing: Karam Puja, celebrated by Adivasi tea-garden communities in August or September with all-night singing and dancing; and the Jalpesh Mela at the Jalpesh temple near Maynaguri around Mahashivratri in February or March, one of the largest fairs in North Bengal.

  • Durga Puja: September or October, lunar calendar; book rooms and trains months ahead.
  • Bhandani Puja: the day after Dashami, in Rajbanshi villages around Lataguri and Maynaguri.
  • Karam Puja: August or September, in tea-garden villages; parks are closed but the festival is open.
  • Jalpesh Mela: around Mahashivratri, February or March, near Maynaguri.

Choose by what you want to see

If rhinos are the priority, aim for February to April in Jaldapara. The grass is shorter after the late-winter burning and cutting, and rhinos graze in the open in the early morning. November to January works too, but the grass is still tall in places and fog can hang over the grassland until the sun burns it off.

For gaur and elephants at Gorumara's watchtowers, the drier months from February to May are strongest, as animals come to the salt licks and pools more often when water elsewhere is scarce. For birds, December to March brings winter visitors to the rivers and Gajoldoba, while resident forest birds such as hornbills, barbets and minivets are active and calling from March onward.

For Kangchenjunga views from Samsing, Jhalong or the road up to Darjeeling, October to early December is the clearest season; spring haze often hides the high peaks. For tea gardens at their greenest, with pluckers in the rows, choose March to May or late September to November.

Holidays and crowds

The Dooars fills up on a predictable calendar, set mostly by Bengal's holidays. Puja week in September or October is the busiest and most expensive week of the year. The Christmas and New Year week, from about 24 December to 1 January, comes next. Long weekends around Republic Day, Holi and Good Friday also fill Lataguri, and the May school holidays bring families from Kolkata for most of the month.

Outside these windows the region is quiet. Mid-week in mid-November to mid-December, mid-January to early March and late April is when we find the best balance of open parks, easy bookings and lower prices. Many lodges discount mid-week stays by 20–40% in these weeks, and safari slots that sell out in minutes at weekends are often available a few days ahead. If your dates are flexible, move them a few days off a holiday weekend; it makes more difference to the trip than any hotel upgrade.

What to pack by season

The Dooars is lowland country, so you need less than for the hills, but early mornings in winter catch people out, and the humidity in April and May is tiring.

  • November to February: a fleece and warm jacket for dawn safaris, a cap, and cotton layers for the day.
  • March to May: light cotton, a hat, sunscreen, a light rain jacket for evening storms and plenty of water.
  • All year: earth-coloured clothes for safaris, binoculars, mosquito repellent and a torch.
  • June to September: a good umbrella, quick-dry clothes and sandals, and a flexible plan.

Questions people ask

Good to know

What is the best month to visit the Dooars

November to March is the most comfortable, with dry, mild weather and all the parks open. For the best chance of animal sightings, many people prefer late February to April, when grass is cut back and animals come to water. Avoid mid-June to mid-September, when the parks are closed.

When do Gorumara and Jaldapara close for the monsoon

Both parks close to tourists from about 15 June to 15 September each year, as do Chapramari, Chilapata, Buxa and Mahananda. Gorumara safaris are also usually closed on Thursdays. Exact dates can shift with weather and forest department orders, so check current status before you travel.

Is October a good time for the Dooars

Yes, once the parks have reopened and the rains clear, though early October can still be wet. Durga Puja week is the most crowded and expensive week of the year, with rooms and safari slots booked weeks ahead. The second half of October, after the holidays, is calm and good value.

Is the Dooars too hot in April and May

It is warm and humid, with afternoons of about 30–32 °C and evening storms. Safaris are still good, and often excellent for sightings, if you go at dawn and late afternoon and rest at midday. Choose a room with air conditioning or a good fan. Mid-week rates are low.

How cold is the Dooars in winter

Days are mild at about 20–25 °C, but nights at Lataguri and Madarihat drop to around 9–12 °C in December and January, and open jeeps at dawn feel colder. Pack a fleece and a warm jacket. Fog is common in the mornings from mid-December to January.

Can I visit the Dooars in the monsoon

You can stay at Lataguri, Murti, Samsing or Jhalong, and some lodges remain open at their lowest rates, but there are no safaris from mid-June to mid-September. Rivers flood quickly and some roads, including the one to Totopara, can be cut off. It suits people who want green tea gardens and quiet, not wildlife.

When are migratory birds in the Dooars

From about November to March. Ducks, waders and other winter visitors gather on the Teesta at Gajoldoba and along the rivers of the Dooars. Resident birds such as hornbills, peafowl and kingfishers are seen all year in the parks while they are open. Early mornings are best.

What festivals happen in the Dooars

Durga Puja in September or October, followed by Bhandani Puja in Rajbanshi villages the next day; Karam Puja in tea-garden villages in August or September; and the Jalpesh Mela near Maynaguri around Mahashivratri in February or March. All follow the lunar calendar, so dates move each year.

When is the Dooars cheapest

Rooms are cheapest in the monsoon, but the parks are closed then. For a trip with safaris, the best value is mid-week in mid-November to mid-December, mid-January to early March, and late October after Puja, when many lodges charge 20–40% less than at weekends.
