Which park for what
The Dooars has six protected areas that visitors use, strung along about 200 km of foothills from Siliguri to Alipurduar. They are not all the same, and picking the right one matters more than how many you visit. Gorumara is small and built around watchtowers. Jaldapara is big, open grassland and the best place in Bengal for rhinos. Chapramari is a tiny sanctuary with one excellent tower. Chilapata and Buxa are dense forest where you see fewer animals but feel further from the road. Mahananda, just outside Siliguri, is for birds and a half-day drive.
Areas and counts below come from park and census figures; sightings are never guaranteed.
| Park | Base | Known for | Safari style |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gorumara National Park, ≈ 80 sq km | Lataguri | Gaur, elephant, about 61 rhinos (2025) | Jeep to a watchtower |
| Jaldapara National Park, ≈ 216 sq km | Madarihat | About 331 rhinos (2025), grassland birds | Jeep safari |
| Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary, ≈ 9.6 sq km | Chalsa, Lataguri | Elephants at the tower | Jeep to a watchtower |
| Chilapata forest | Hasimara, Madarihat | Dense forest, Nalraja Garh ruins | Jeep safari |
| Buxa Tiger Reserve, ≈ 760 sq km | Rajabhatkhawa, Jayanti | Forest, birds, Buxa Fort | Jeep safari and guided walks |
| Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary | Siliguri | Hornbills, gaur, Sevoke | Drive and short walks |
How booking works
Safari seats and watchtower slots are sold by the West Bengal forest department through its official online booking system, and at counters at the park gates when seats remain. You choose the park, date, slot and route or tower, enter the name, age and ID number of every traveller, and pay online. The jeep, driver and forest guide are assigned at the counter. Booking usually opens a few days to a few weeks ahead, and the rules change, so check current status before you travel.
Weekend, Puja-week and Christmas-week slots often sell out within hours of release. If you cannot get an online seat, ask at the counter early on the day, but do not plan a trip around that. Never buy from a stranger at the gate offering seats at double the price; tickets are tied to your name and ID, and touts' seats can be refused at the gate.
Government lodges, such as Murti Banani, Aranya at Madarihat and the Malangi lodge near Hasimara, are booked separately on their own official sites. Book the room first, then the safari, so that your dates line up.
- Carry the same original photo ID you entered when booking, for every adult.
- Reach the counter 30–45 minutes before your slot.
- Keep the online confirmation on your phone and a screenshot, as signal is weak at some gates.
- Camera and guide fees may be collected separately in cash.
Gorumara and the watchtowers
Gorumara works differently from most Indian parks. Instead of driving long circuits, your jeep takes you to one watchtower, where you climb up and sit above a salt lick or waterhole for about an hour. Jatraprasad, named after a well-known forest elephant, and the Rhino Observation Point look over open ground where gaur, elephants, sambar and sometimes rhinos come to the water. Chukchuki is good for birds. Chandrachur and Medla are on the Murti side; at Medla the forest department has run a short bullock-cart or jeep ride from a forest village to the tower.
A jeep with a watchtower costs about ₹2,500–3,500 for up to six, and tower tickets alone ₹70–250 per person, indicative 2026. Afternoon slots, in the last hours before dusk, are usually the best for sightings. Gorumara safaris are usually closed on Thursdays; check current status before you travel.
Jaldapara jeep safaris
Jaldapara, on the Torsa river near Madarihat, is the place for rhinos. Its numbers rose from 14 in 1985 to an estimated 331 in the March 2025 census, the second-largest population in India after Kaziranga. Jeeps run on set routes through tall elephant grass and riverine forest. The dawn slot is the one to book: rhinos, gaur, hog deer and wild boar are out in the open in the cool hours, and the light is soft.
A jeep for up to six costs about ₹2,800–4,000, indicative 2026. Elephant rides have been offered at some times, but not reliably in recent years, especially after the Hollong Tourist Lodge inside the park burned down in June 2024. Check current status before you travel. From late winter, parts of the grassland are burned or cut back, which helps sightings in February to April.
Chapramari, Chilapata, Buxa and Mahananda
Chapramari, near Chalsa and a short drive from Lataguri, is a small sanctuary with a single watchtower overlooking a waterhole where elephants often come in the afternoon. It is a good extra session if Gorumara slots are full. Chilapata, between Jaldapara and Buxa near Hasimara, is a dark, dense forest corridor used by elephants; the jeep track passes the brick ruins of Nalraja Garh. You see fewer animals than in Jaldapara, but you are often alone on the track.
Buxa Tiger Reserve, the largest of the group, runs from flat forest at Rajabhatkhawa up to the Bhutan border. Tigers are now extremely rare here; people come for the forest, the birds, at least 284 species, the Buxa Fort walk and Jayanti. Mahananda, on the edge of Siliguri at Sukna and Sevoke, is a half-day for hornbills and the view of the Teesta at the Coronation Bridge.
A sample two-park safari plan
For a first visit we suggest four nights and four safari sessions, two in each of the big parks. Spend two nights at Lataguri. On the first afternoon, take a Gorumara watchtower slot at Jatraprasad or the Rhino Observation Point. Next morning, take Chukchuki for birds, or Chapramari's tower if Gorumara is full, and in the late afternoon try Medla or Chandrachur on the Murti side.
On day three drive about 95 km east to Madarihat through the Chalsa and Binnaguri tea gardens and rest through the afternoon. Book the dawn Jaldapara safari for day four, and a second Jaldapara or a Chilapata safari that afternoon. On day five, a last dawn safari is possible before you leave for Siliguri or Bhutan. Booking four sessions ahead is the hardest part of the trip, so do it the day slots open, and leave Thursdays out of your Gorumara plans. Check current status before you travel.
Beyond the big animals
Most visitors judge a Dooars safari by rhinos and elephants, but the parks hold far more. Gorumara records about 50 mammal species and roughly 194 bird species, including great and wreathed hornbills. Jaldapara's grassland holds Bengal florican, a rare bustard, and hog deer, while the rivers have otters and many kingfishers. Buxa, which rises to the Bhutan border, adds hill birds that you will not see in the plains parks.
Bring binoculars and a simple bird book or app, and ask your forest guide to stop for birds as well as mammals; most are happy to. Watchtower sessions are especially good for this, because you sit still for an hour and the birds come close. Monitor lizards, butterflies in spring and the forest sounds at dusk are all part of the experience.
Safari manners and safety
The animals here are wild, and some of them are large. Wild elephants are the main wildlife danger in North Bengal, mostly on roads and at the forest edge after dark. On safari you are in a vehicle with a trained driver and forest guide, which is the safest way to see them. The rules below make better sightings as well as safer ones.
- Wear earth-coloured clothes; skip perfume and bright colours.
- Keep voices low in the watchtowers and turn phones to silent.
- Never get out of the jeep unless the guide says so.
- Do not feed animals or throw anything from the vehicle.
- Do not walk on forest roads, riverbeds or tea-garden edges at dusk or after dark.
- Carry binoculars: most good sightings in the Dooars are 50–200 m away.
Questions people ask
Good to know
How do I book a Gorumara safari online
Use the West Bengal forest department's official online booking system. Choose Gorumara, your date, slot and watchtower, enter the name, age and ID number of every traveller, and pay online. Bring the same original IDs to the counter at Lataguri 30–45 minutes before your slot. Booking windows change, so check current status before you travel.
How far ahead should I book a Dooars safari
As soon as booking opens for your dates. For weekends from November to February, Puja week and the Christmas–New Year week, slots often sell out within hours. Mid-week in February or March, a few days ahead may be enough. Book your lodge first, then the safari, so the dates line up.
Which is the best park in the Dooars
It depends on what you want. For rhinos in open country, Jaldapara. For sitting quietly while gaur and elephants come to a salt lick, Gorumara. For a wilder forest feel with fewer vehicles, Chilapata or Buxa. Most first-time visitors do Gorumara and Jaldapara on one trip.
When are the Dooars parks closed
Gorumara, Jaldapara, Chapramari, Chilapata, Buxa and Mahananda close to tourists from about 15 June to 15 September for the monsoon and breeding season. Gorumara safaris are also usually closed on Thursdays. Opening dates can shift with weather, so check current status before you travel.
What animals can I see in Gorumara and Jaldapara
Common sightings are gaur, Asian elephant, one-horned rhino, sambar, barking deer, hog deer, wild boar and peafowl, with hornbills, eagles and many grassland and forest birds. Leopards are present but rarely seen. Tigers are not a realistic sighting in the Dooars today. Rhinos are easier in Jaldapara.
Is the morning or afternoon safari better
In Jaldapara, the dawn jeep safari usually gives the best rhino sightings, as animals graze in the open in the cool hours. In Gorumara, late-afternoon watchtower slots are often best, as animals come to the salt licks before dusk. If you can do only one, book the dawn safari in Jaldapara and an afternoon tower in Gorumara.
Can I book a safari at the gate without booking online
Sometimes. Counters at Lataguri and Madarihat sell remaining seats on the day, but in busy weeks there may be none left. Arrive early with original ID. Do not rely on this for a weekend or holiday trip, and never buy from touts. Check current status before you travel.
Are elephant safaris available in Jaldapara
Elephant rides have been offered in Jaldapara in some seasons, but not reliably in recent years, particularly after the Hollong lodge fire in June 2024. Where they run, they cost about ₹1,000–2,000 per person, indicative 2026, and seats are limited. Check current status before you travel.
Do children need ID for Dooars safaris
Adults need original photo ID matching the booking. For children, carry a birth certificate, school ID or Aadhaar copy as age proof, since some parks charge by age and some set age limits for elephant rides. Rules vary between parks, so check current status before you travel.
