Singalila Ridge trail towards Chiwa Bhanjyang

The Singalila Ridge runs north–south along the border between Nepal and India, from the Darjeeling hills into West Sikkim. Uttarey sits on its northern slopes, and old trails climb from the village to the border pass at Chiwa Bhanjyang. Bhanjyang is the Nepali word for a pass. Local people used these routes for generations to move between Sikkim and Nepal for trade, family visits and grazing. Many of those paths are still in daily use.
The walk climbs steadily through oak, magnolia and rhododendron forest, with clearings that open views back over West Sikkim. Distances and timings depend on how far you go and how fit you are, so we do not quote a fixed figure. Plan a full day for a return walk with a local guide. Longer treks continue along the ridge in Sikkim towards Phoktey Dara and Barsey and need tents or huts and a registered operator.
The pass has an SSB border post. Indian walkers should carry photo ID; foreign nationals should not attempt this route without an operator who has confirmed what is allowed. We cannot confirm current crossing rules, so do not plan to enter Nepal here, and check current status before you travel. Weather turns fast on the ridge: carry a warm layer, rain shell, water and food. Leave early, turn back by early afternoon, and tell your homestay your plan.

Questions people ask
Good to know
Can I cross into Nepal at Chiwa Bhanjyang
Do not plan on it. Chiwa Bhanjyang is a border pass with an SSB post, and we cannot confirm that it is open as a crossing for tourists. Foreign nationals in particular should cross only at authorised border points. Treat the pass as a ridge walk and check current status before you travel.
Do I need a guide for the Singalila trail from Uttarey
Yes, we strongly suggest one. Trails split in the forest, signs are few, cloud comes in fast and the border is close. A local guide costs about ₹1,000–1,800 a day, indicative, 2026, and can also explain the plants, birds and village stories along the way.
When is the best time for the Uttarey ridge walk
October to December gives the clearest views of the snow peaks and dry trails. April and May bring rhododendron flowers on the ridge but more haze and afternoon showers. January and February can bring snow higher up. Avoid June to September, when the forest is wet and full of leeches.
